The weather predictors had it right; our Wednesday morning work crew would be toiling in a much-needed rain. Nonetheless, eight volunteers showed up to continue working on selectively clearing surplus Indian Plums to make room for out-competed plants and planned infusions in our attempt to add to the diversity of the Reserve's understory. Afterwards, it was down to The Golden Arches for a hot McCafé to regain some of our body heat lost to wet clothing. Not pictured are photographer Bill and non-attendees Barry and Steve. On the left are Bruce and Blanka; on the right are Lee, Jean, and Tom. As you can see, there would have been plenty of room for you at the table.

A former Salem Audubon Society President, Mark Wigg has for forty years volunteered all over town as a goodwill ambassador in a variety of roles making our community a better place.
The following is from a post on his Facebook:
"Good morning for a Work Out. Cool and cloudy made moving chips to trail at Salem Audubon Nature Reserve easier. I am very impressed with the work Lee, and the volunteers have done at the Reserve, very little blackberry and ivy, and artsy signs to help navigate. A guy walked by and said this route is much preferred over walking on the sidewalk next to traffic. The osprey above the trail was loudly encouraging with her high-pitched screeches. If you want a forest bath with hill climbing, this is a good place to go."

Janita is well-known for volunteering in the Bush Park rose gardens, the Waterfront Park Carousel, and the Salem Audubon Nature Reserve. She also competes in Dragonboat Races. In addition, her huge Facebook following enjoys viewing her naturalist posts and related topics. Recently, she took a friend on a tour of the Reserve. Working solo, Jean has finished the building of a very artistic trail from the eastside of the Osprey Way Trail to the wildlife viewing bench. Click on the photos for more information. The pictures show the sequence of construction and the finished trail. More episodes include the placing of boulder signage and planting appropriate plants to attract wildlife for viewing.

Congratulation to those who identified the feather found on the ground from the Great Blue Heron, roughly in the center of the Reserve. That story was posted on our Facebook several days ago. In the comments that followed, fan Nicole related an incident in which a fly-by GBH lost a feather that floated down for her retrieval. That feather is in the first photo. The second feather belonged to a hummingbird. She wanted us to see the great contrast in size. Thank you, Nicole, for the interesting photos and commentary.

In the process of clearing overgrown patches of Indian Plum to increase the Reserve's understory diversity, we found an old hummingbird nest and a large bird feather. If you think you can identify the species of bird that lost this feather, leave a comment.

For wildlife viewing, our newest bench construction is now complete with the addition of the armrests. Once again Team Tom & Jean has built a wonderful addition to the Reserve from repurposed old materials. The 4 X 4 posts came from the old kiosk under the osprey nest; the seat boards from the decommissioned picnic table down in The Roost; the backrest boards from a donor's torn-down fence; the used pavers from another donor's home; and other parts from the Reserve's in-case-we-need-it pile of lumber.

Reserve neighbor Twila, whose elevated home provides a good view of our osprey family, reports that the parents are raising two offspring. Here you can see one of the chicks being fed bites of fish from the nearby Willamette River. Thank you, Twila, for the photo. We look forward to more updates.
