We are—and so is this truck.

This week, an independent contractor stopped by WilsonTech Services to get his Freightliner ready for the road. His assignment this season? Transporting Cal Football’s equipment across the country.

It’s a great reminder that long before the lights come on and the first whistle blows, there’s an entire operation working behind the scenes to make game day possible.

Equipment has to be packed.
Schedules have to be met.
Thousands of miles have to be covered.

And the truck carrying it all has to be ready to perform.

That’s where we come in.

Whether a vehicle is hauling equipment for a college football program, carrying materials to a jobsite, making deliveries throughout Northern California, or supporting a government operation, our responsibility is the same:

PASSING THE TEST DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN YOU’RE COMPLIANT.

California’s Clean Truck Check is in effect, and for fleet operators, there’s more to compliance than simply getting an emissions test.

A vehicle can pass its emissions test and still have a compliance problem.

Fleet owners need to make sure their vehicles are:
✅ Properly reported in CTC-VIS
✅ Current on annual compliance fees
✅ Tested by the assigned deadline
✅ Showing the correct VIN and vehicle information
✅ Clear of outstanding compliance or enforcement issues

And there’s another issue we regularly see with modern trucks:

The vehicle has to be ready to test.

For OBD-equipped vehicles, simply clearing a check-engine light or disconnecting a battery before testing can create another problem.

Readiness monitors may not have completed, meaning the vehicle may need additional operation—and potentially further diagnosis—before a passing compliance result can be submitted.

That's why we believe Clean Truck Check should be treated as a compliance process, not just an emissions test.

At WilsonTech Services, we can help fleets work through that process:

BRAKE SAFETY WEEK IS UNDERWAY. IS YOUR FLEET READY?

CVSA Brake Safety Week is happening now, August 23–29, with commercial vehicle inspectors across North America placing additional attention on brake systems.

This year's special focus: brake drums and rotors.

For fleet operators, this isn't just a compliance issue. It's an uptime issue.

A brake defect discovered during preventative maintenance can be scheduled, repaired, documented, and returned to service.

A brake defect discovered during a roadside inspection can mean an out-of-service vehicle, an interrupted route, a missed job, emergency repairs, and a driver waiting while the problem gets resolved.

Inspectors will be looking closely at brake-system condition, including:
🔧 Cracked, broken, or excessively worn drums and rotors
🔧 Worn, damaged, missing, or contaminated pads and linings
🔧 Air leaks and damaged hoses or tubing
🔧 Brake adjustment and excessive pushrod travel
🔧 Brake chambers and other loose, damaged, or nonfunctioning components
🔧 ABS faults and warning indicators
🔧 Tractor-protection and other critical brake-system functions

And the risk is very real. During CVSA's unannounced Brake Safety Day earlier this year, 574 of 4,021 commercial vehicles inspected—14.3%—were restricted from travel because of brake-related out-of-service violations.

Not every busy week in the shop comes with a dramatic repair story—and that's exactly how we like it.

Right now, WilsonTech is packed.

Preventive maintenance. Inspections. Minor diagnostics. Routine repairs. Vehicles coming in, getting serviced, and getting back to work.

For a fleet operator, that's what a successful maintenance program should look like.

The goal isn't to wait until a transmission fails, an engine goes down, or an emissions problem takes a vehicle out of service. It's to build a maintenance relationship that catches problems early, keeps repairs manageable, and minimizes the amount of time an asset spends sitting in a shop instead of earning money in the field.

Modern vehicles have become more complex—and the cost of getting the diagnosis wrong has never been higher.

What looks like a straightforward transmission repair can be anything but.
On this vehicle, accessing and replacing the transmission requires removing the entire powertrain assembly—including the engine, transmission, and subframe—from the vehicle. This is a major repair that requires the right equipment, technical knowledge, and experienced technicians to complete correctly.

But the most important work happens before the first bolt is removed: accurate diagnosis.

When a repair requires this level of disassembly, there is very little room for guesswork. Misdiagnosing the original problem can mean hours of unnecessary labor, thousands of dollars in avoidable costs, and a customer still dealing with the same issue after the vehicle is put back together.

One challenge we continue to see in the industry is vehicles going from shop to shop without the underlying issue being correctly diagnosed. That often leads to repeat failures, unnecessary parts replacement, more downtime, and customers spending additional money on the same problem without a lasting solution.

Recently, we had a vehicle come in with ongoing emission-related issues. After a thorough inspection by our ASE-certified technicians and Master ASE technician, our team identified the true root cause: a crack in the vehicle’s selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. By diagnosing the problem correctly the first time, we were able to help the customer understand exactly what was happening and avoid continuing to spend money on repeat issues without a real solution.

From there, we went back to the customer and walked through a cost analysis of the options. Repairing the vehicle would have required an investment of roughly $12,000, while the vehicle itself was only worth about $8,000. Based on that analysis, we recommended retiring the unit rather than putting significant money into a vehicle that was already beyond a practical repair threshold. The customer ultimately agreed that it made more sense to put that money toward a replacement vehicle rather than continue investing in one with a high likelihood of additional catastrophic failures.

It is about giving customers clear, honest guidance so they can make the best long-term decision for their business. Sometimes that means repairing the vehicle. Other times, it means helping the customer recognize when it is time to retire it and move on.

Earlier this week, we shared how one of our fleet customers was hit by catalytic converter theft.

Now, the first round of parts is in, and we are installing our custom catalytic converter deterrent cages.

We wanted to share this update because it shows customers what is possible when it comes to proactively protecting their vehicles. For many businesses, catalytic converter theft is not just an inconvenience — it creates downtime, unexpected repair costs, scheduling disruptions, and lost productivity. That is why prevention matters.

Preventative maintenance is only one part of protecting your fleet. Theft prevention matters too.

Last week, one of our fleet customers had four trucks hit for catalytic converter theft, with several additional vehicles suffering damage to large fuel tanks. Unfortunately, this is the kind of crime that can create major operational disruption in a very short amount of time.

For many businesses, a stolen catalytic converter or a damaged fuel tank has the same business impact as a mechanical breakdown: vehicles go down, schedules get disrupted, repair costs add up, and productivity suffers. Last night, I had the privilege of attending Sacramento Business Journal’s New CEOs gathering at SAFE Credit Union.

What made the evening especially meaningful was that it was also a celebration of David Lichtman’s retirement as Publisher of the Sacramento Business Journal. During his tenure, David created something truly valuable through the New CEO dinner series — bringing together leaders who are in the first 2 years of becoming CEOs to build real relationships, learn from one another, and create a peer network we can lean on as we grow into these roles.

As someone still early in that journey, I can say those kinds of rooms matter. Leadership can be rewarding, but it can also be isolating. Having the opportunity to connect with other CEOs, have higher-level conversations, and build authentic peer-to-peer relationships is incredibly valuable.

I’m grateful as well to have reconnected with so many great people throughout the evening, including Adonai Mack, Julie Hirota, Delania Lustig, as well as meeting other impressive leaders like Craig Adelman.

It was also great to hear that Bryan Flaherty will be stepping into the publisher role as David begins his retirement. Wishing both David and Brian nothing but success in this next chapter.

A sincere thank you to David for his personal mentorship, his warm welcome, and for creating a space that brings new CEOs together in such a meaningful way.
