🚨 What Happens When You Put the Wrong Coolant in Your Vehicle? 🚨
Today we're working on a 2017 Audi Q7 that came into the shop with a serious cooling system issue. The problem? Another shop added the wrong type of coolant.
Many people think coolant is just coolant, but modern vehicles—especially European vehicles like Audi—require specific coolant formulations designed to work with the metals, seals, and components in the cooling system.
When incompatible coolants are mixed together, a chemical reaction can occur that causes the coolant to coagulate, turning it into a thick gel or sludge. This sludge can clog heater cores, radiators, water passages, and even damage water pumps and other cooling system components. The result can be overheating, expensive repairs, and potential engine damage.
The lesson here is simple: Always verify the correct coolant specification for your vehicle before topping off the system. The color of the coolant alone is not a reliable indicator of compatibility. What matters is the manufacturer's specification.
A few dollars saved by using the wrong coolant can quickly turn into thousands of dollars in repairs.
