A closer look at our G99 M5 Touring, BMW’s newest super wagon and one of the most exciting platforms to hit the M lineup in years. It has the presence, the practicality, and the attitude you’d expect from an M car, just in a shape that makes everything a little more fun.

A few things that make the G99 stand out:

1️⃣ The New S68 V8 Hybrid Setup
BMW’s twin-turbo S68 V8, paired with hybrid assist, gives the G99 instant response and a ton of usable torque. It’s powerful, smooth, and surprisingly efficient for what it is.

2️⃣ M xDrive + Touring Body = Daily Perfection
The rear-biased xDrive setup keeps it playful, but the extra grip makes the wagon seriously quick in the real world. Add the space and utility of the Touring chassis and it becomes a car you can actually live with every day.

At Bimmer’s Decatur, Will breaks down the process of manual-swapping a Dinan-tuned E46 M3, one of the most common long-term solutions for aging SMG-equipped cars.

The E46 M3’s SMG II system relies on a high-pressure hydraulic pump, a salmon relay, position sensors, accumulators, and an electro-hydraulic actuator to execute shifts. As these cars reach 20+ years old, the SMG pump becomes one of the most frequent points of failure — often losing pressure, overheating, or failing intermittently under load.

BMW has discontinued brand-new SMG pumps, leaving owners with only aftermarket or remanufactured options. These replacements can work, but they lack OEM lifespan and consistency, especially on cars that see spirited driving or track use.

That’s why many owners — including the owner of this Dinan M3 — elect for a 6-speed manual conversion.

And replaces the entire system with a direct, mechanical linkage that delivers:

• Increased reliability
• Full driver engagement
• Lower long-term maintenance costs
• A purer connection to the S54’s powerband
