Cells are looking awesome this year. This will make superior queens. Notice how full the caps are with royal jelly. The first step in quality control is growing exceptional cells.

Moonrise to moonset, sunrise to sundown; there is no time of day or night that we are not willing to do right... by the bees. Commercial beekeeping can be very demanding, but when you love what you do, it is amazing what you are capable of.

Here they come! The wait has been long this year with the extended winter and cool wet spring. Luckily we had some nice pockets of excellent mating weather despite the late start to the season. Thank you to all that have been waiting ever so patiently, and thank you to team Old Sol for making it all happen. We have been preparing for this moment since late last year. Looking like the nectar will flow pretty nicely if the 10 day forecast holds.

There is nothing like 1.3 inches of rain in the mating yard on ripe cell day. At least the cell quality has been stellar. These are 10 day cells that we couldn't place today. Small break in the weather to try and get them all in on day 11 and 12. Most will hatch on the 13th day after grafting so the clock is ticking. Freshly hatched virgin queens need immediate attention from nurse bees or their health declines rapidly. Seems like all we have to do to conjure up an atmospheric river this year is to have a few thousand ripe queen cells around. Great cells will always have a ton of royal jelly left over after pupation. Of you can see daylight through your cups, try harder.

Finally! With all the flooding and atmospheric rivers, 2023 cell building is off to a late start. At least the cell quality is looking terrific. This will be ripe just in time for another monster storm.

The bees surrounding the queen are what is known as a retinue. Only the highest quality queens can attract a large retinue. The retinue workers are the queen's primary helpers. They feed her, groom her, and help distribute her pheromones around the nest. Good helpers are not only crucial for queen bees, but also essential for Queen breeders. Old Sol is officially looking for help in the 2023 season and beyond. Please direct message for details if you are interested in joining the team and learning how to raise queens and other aspects of commercial beekeeping.

The Beester Bunny just dropped a load of 324 colonies to make delicious blueberries at . The weather hasn't been the best for pollination or mating queens. One variety, Dukes, are open and getting worked at only 48°F. Our bees are eager and don't mind cooler temperatures. Second photo shows a variety that should be open in a week or so.

First capped cells of 2022! Just a few thousand more to go for the month of March and we will be off to a great start for the year. New queens are such an amazing blessing.

A few of our 2022 breeder queens. Some of these beauties are on their 3rd season and still producing massive highly productive colonies. The older queens are the ones with the blue paint remnants. These queens were selected for their low mite counts, behavior, temperament, honey production, and rapid buildup. These bees keep beans on the table, quite literally and figuratively.
