Living this close to the coast, how your home is anchored matters more than most people realize, and it is one of the easiest things to overlook until weather is already on the way.

Myth: tie-downs and anchors are a one-time install you never have to think about again.
Reality: straps loosen over time, anchors shift in the soil, and ground conditions change season to season, especially after a wet stretch.

A quick visual check before peak storm season catches the small problems while they are still cheap to fix. Walk the perimeter and look for rusted or frayed straps, anchors that have worked loose, and any strap that has gone slack or stopped pulling tight. None of it takes long, and it is a lot less stressful to handle on a calm afternoon than when a system is already building over Aransas Bay.

If anything looks worn or loose, have it inspected before the next round of weather. Peace of mind is worth the ten minute walk.

Salt air is part of the trade-off for living near the bay, and most of us would not give up the view for anything. It is still worth knowing that the same breeze you love is quietly working on your home in the background.

Here are three things it goes after first:
1. Your AC coils and outdoor unit. Salt speeds up corrosion, so a yearly rinse and a quick inspection go a long way toward keeping the system running efficiently through summer.
2. Metal fixtures and hardware. Hinges, screws, door handles, and outdoor fittings rust noticeably faster here than they do inland, so a little oil and attention keeps them working.
3. Exterior light fixtures and fasteners. Watch for that chalky white buildup and clean it off before it has a chance to spread and pit the surface.

None of this is dramatic, it is just regular upkeep. A rinse with fresh water every so often, especially after a windy stretch, does more for your home than most people expect.

Ever notice a faint musty smell creep in during the most humid stretch of summer? That is not just the season, that is moisture asking for some attention before it turns into a bigger project.

Coastal humidity and mold tend to go hand in hand, so keeping air moving is half the battle:
- Run your exhaust fans during and after every shower, and give them a few extra minutes to actually clear the room.
- Keep an eye on condensation around windows and AC vents, and wipe it down when you see it instead of letting it sit.
- Pull furniture a few inches off exterior walls so air can move behind it instead of trapping damp against the surface.
- If you do spot a small patch somewhere, clean it early while it is still small and easy to handle.

Mold needs moisture and stillness to take hold, so dry, moving air is the simplest way to keep it from ever getting comfortable in your home.
