A half-model at the Suffolk County Historical Society in New York helped bring this classic yacht to life.

Whirlwind II is a fleet-footed catboat design, like one prized by shell fishermen 150 years ago. Yarrow Thorne recreated her for modern-day racing.

Come on out to the Newport International Boat later this week - Sept. 17-20 - and check out one of our latest projects: DART, a 21-foot Dark Harbor 12 designed by B.B. Crowninshield in 1915. She was brought to us with one goal: to make her “the world’s sexiest small sailboat.” The design features wood/epoxy construction, carbon spars, North 3Di sails, a flush teak deck, and a clean black-and-teak finish inspired by the great J-Class yachts. Fast, responsive, and well balanced, she’s built to be sailed hard and deliver the feel and fun of a much larger yacht in a remarkably small package.
