Ever wonder how Griffin Nissan got its start? Well here is a little bit of early history of how it all got started!

UNION COUNTY HISTORY- FROM CONCORD AVENUE TO THE BOULEVARD: 80 YEARS OF GRIFFIN MOTOR COMPANY

Before the showroom on Roosevelt Boulevard, Griffin Motor Company began with a small used-car business on Concord Avenue and a Union County man willing to take a chance.

His name was Bruce Hartwell Griffin Sr., and in 1946, he founded the dealership that would become a familiar name to generations of local families.

According to the company’s history, Griffin first operated from a small storefront before moving across the street to 1411 Concord Avenue. He added Hudson automobiles and GMC trucks in 1948, followed by Pontiac in 1949 and Buick in 1969.

Born in Union County on March 2, 1919, Bruce was the son of Aaron E. and Martha Deese Griffin. He was only about 27 years old when he started the business.⁠

As Monroe grew, the dealership grew with it. Bruce and his son, Bruce Griffin Jr., saw an opportunity along Roosevelt Boulevard. In 1978, they opened a larger dealership at 2500 West Roosevelt Boulevard, where Griffin Buick GMC operates today. By Bruce Sr.’s death in 2002, the family’s automotive operation had expanded to seven dealerships across four cities.

Bruce Jr. carried the family business forward. A 1958 Monroe High School graduate, he graduated from UNC–Chapel Hill in 1962 and married his wife, Sis, that same year. He died in 2021, leaving his own long connection to Monroe and its business community.

In 2026, Griffin’s story reaches 80 years. Behind those years are memories that never appear in a company timeline: a first car, a family station wagon, a work truck, or the excitement of driving something new home.
