Here's a mistake we see first-time buyers make more than any other.

They find a car they like, take it for a test drive, and figure they'll sort out the financing later. Makes sense on the surface. Keep your options open, right?

Before you commit, take two minutes for these three checks.

Look at the seat bolsters. Heavy wear on the outer edge means real-world high mileage, no matter what the odometer reads.

Trust your nose. A musty or sour smell usually points to a water leak, mold under the carpet, or a clogged cabin air filter.

Test the buttons and screens. Run the climate control, heated seats, windows, and infotainment. Interior electronics are expensive to fix and easy to overlook on a quick walkaround.

A clean, fully working cabin is a good sign the whole car was cared for.
