Here's how it usually happens. A buyer finds a $14,000 car and stretches the loan to 72 months to get the payment down to $220 a month. On paper, it feels like a win.

By month 36, they owe more than the car is worth. Then the transmission goes.

Two cars, same year, same price. One is a great deal. The other is a repair bill waiting to happen.

Here's how to tell the difference before you fall in love with the price.

Clean title status. A clean title means the car was never declared a total loss by an insurance company. Rebuilt or salvage titles can hide structural damage that no detail job will fix. Check this first.

Single-owner history. One previous owner usually means more consistent maintenance and less wear from different driving styles. Two or three owners isn't a dealbreaker, but it's fair to ask why a car changed hands so often in a short time.

Clean accident record. A clean report doesn't guarantee perfection, but it lowers the odds of hidden frame damage, misaligned panels, or airbag work done on the cheap. Pull the vehicle history report and read it.

These are the same three things we call out on our own listings, right next to the price and mileage.
