IDOT and IDNR say more than 40 percent of Illinois deer crashes happen in October, November and December, and November is the highest-risk month.

Their advice:
Slow down when you see one. Others could be following.
Scan the shoulders for eye shine.
If a hit can't be avoided, don't veer into oncoming traffic or off the road.

Already met one? Even a glancing hit can take out a headlight, damage parts of the cooling system or knock the alignment off.

Meet Stephen Zaborsky, owner of Zabor Automotive.

Everybody has a theory about warming up the car.
Ten minutes in the driveway. Twenty. Remote start and a second cup of coffee.

Our Mechanics Corner article says modern engines don't need it.
About 30 seconds lets the oil circulate. Then scrape the windows and drive gently until it warms up.

The exception is visibility. If the defroster needs a few more minutes to clear the glass, give it the minutes.

Coolant is antifreeze.
The name gives away half the job.

The other half is keeping the engine from overheating, all year long.

NHTSA's winter checklist says to make sure you have enough coolant and that it meets your manufacturer's specifications.
Check the system for leaks. Test the coolant.

Sweet smell after a drive? A puddle under the front end? Temperature gauge acting different than it did in July?

This is National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 18 to 24.

NHTSA names the big risks for teen drivers: alcohol and drugs, skipping the seat belt, distracted driving, extra passengers, speeding and drowsy driving.

Talk through all six before you hand over the keys.
Phone down. Buckle up. Limit passengers. Keep it at the limit. Sober and rested, every time.

You can't avoid what you can't see.

NHTSA's winter checklist: make sure the defrosters and every wiper work, replace worn blades, and fill the reservoir with winter washer fluid with de-icer.
One snowstorm can go through a lot of fluid.

Streaking? Chattering? A blade that skips across the glass?
That blade is done.
