Hackers Access Owner Data, Execute Commands Through Shared Vehicle Telematics

A security engineer recently uncovered security vulnerabilities in vehicles produced by four OEMs, through hacking the website of one company that manages telematics functionality for those manufacturers and seven others.

The findings seem to support the concerns raised by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI) over efforts by the aftermarket to pass “right-to-repair” initiatives that would force OEMs to standardize access to sensitive vehicle data.

UK Research Finds Use of 6 ADAS Features Would Reduce Crashes by Nearly 24%

If all vehicles in the United Kingdom were to have adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blindspot warning, electronic stability control, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) installed and in regular use by drivers, a group of researchers believe crashes would be reduced by nearly 24%.

Honda Says It Will Add Hands-Free Technology to All Models Sold in the US by 2030

Honda Motor Co. on Wednesday announced its plans to expand its Honda Sensing suite of advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) technology to include hands-free features on all of its models by 2030.

The next-generation Honda Sensing 360 system “will realize new functions to reduce driver burden by detecting abnormal conditions occurring to the driver and vehicle’s surroundings to prevent collisions,” Honda said. It said the new functions would be added to the current Honda Sensing 360 and applied sequentially on a global basis starting in 2024. The Acura version of Honda Sensing 360 will be called AcuraWatch.

What Cars Are Being Discontinued in 2023? Honda, Toyota and Chevrolet Are All Axing Models

The fleet of vehicles being discontinued includes a number of passenger cars such as the Chevrolet Spark, the Toyota Avalon and the Honda Insight, as Americans continue to flock to SUVs. "The extra-small SUVs are definitely becoming a much more popular entry-level for these brands," says Will Kaufman, news editor at car-research site Edmunds.

Automakers discontinue models in response to evolving consumer tastes and declining sales. Some brands ditch vehicles that compete with others in their lineup.

Ask About Post-repair ADAS Calibrations, Boston Globe Advises Consumers

The Boston Globe has published an article advising consumers to make certain that their vehicles’ advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) components have been calibrated after repair, warning that many shops skip this “vital safety step.”

The article, by staff writer Hiawatha Bray, points out what all repairers know but consumers might not: Even a minor collision might result in a sensor being out of alignment, with potentially serious consequences for the driver and other motorists.

Hurricane Ian Prompts a Question: How Many Totaled Vehicles Return to the Road?

Hurricane Ian caused widespread flooding across Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina in October, resulting in losses estimated at between $41 billion and $70 billion. Among those losses were up to 358,000 vehicles damaged by floodwaters, according to Carfax.

As the vehicles are declared total losses and proceed to auction, there’s a good chance that a significant number of them will take to the road again, adding to a global reclamation fleet that includes uncounted vehicles damaged in collisions.

IIHS: Some Small Cars Rated Poor in Simulated Side Impact by SUVs

An Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) side impact test redesigned last year to reflect the effects of a larger, heavier vehicle moving at a higher speed has resulted in poor ratings for four of 11 small sedans and hatchbacks tested.

The new barrier weighs 4,200 pounds — close to the weight of today’s midsize SUVs — and strikes the test vehicle at 37 mph, compared with a 3,300-pound barrier traveling at 31 mph in the original evaluation. Together, those two changes mean the test involves 82% more energy.
