Alert: Starting July 1, no more paper vehicle titles in Illinois.

According to a report from WTVO "Illinois to ditch paper vehicle titles for digital system"

[Q: Is the idea of no longer having paper vehicle titles a good idea?]

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias (D) has announced that Illinois will go paperless with vehicle titles. Illinois will switch to an Electronic Lein and Titling program (ELT). The system will eliminate paper vehicle titles and in-person DMV visits.

ELT program will become mandatory at all Illinois Driver’s Services Facilities and replace paper titles with a secure digital system.

It remains unclear on how the consumer will facilitate a private vehicle sale without "title in hand"

The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office says going digital reduces mailing and storage costs, shortens processing time and provides real-time visibility into lien and title records.

DeKalb Illinois issues fair and balanced analysis: This potentially could cause big problems for individuals who privately sell their vehicles. Also, If you want to look up the status of your vehicle ownership, you’ll have to contact the state to verify it is in their electronic system, as you will no longer have a physical paper title
What's Next? Will you have to get permission from the state before you can sell your vehicle? and will they say you can't sell your vehicle because the state didn't approve it without paying a new tax.
