As temperatures drop, cold weather can expose minor vehicle issues before you even hit the road. Here is a quick checklist to make sure your vehicle is cold-weather ready:
✅️Test Your Battery: Freezing temperatures significantly reduce cranking power. Have your battery and charging system tested if it is more than 3 years old.
✅️Inspect Tires & Pressure: For every 10-degree drop in temperature, tire pressure typically drops 1 PSI. Check your tread depth and ensure cold tire pressures match the driver’s door jamb placard.
✅️Check Antifreeze & Coolant: Ensure your coolant mixture is rated for freezing temperatures to prevent engine block damage and heater core freeze-ups.
✅️Replace Worn Wiper Blades & Fill Washer Fluid: Switch to winter-grade wiper fluid that won’t freeze on the windshield, and swap out streaking wiper blades.
✅️Inspect Brakes & Suspension: Slick road conditions demand predictable braking and solid handling. Any pulling or vibration should be addressed immediately.
✅️Pack a Cold-Weather Emergency Kit: Keep a heavy blanket, flashlight, jumper cables/jump pack, ice scraper, and phone charger in the vehicle.
Stay ahead of the freeze—take a few minutes this week to inspect your vehicle and stay safe on the roads.
