You can laugh! I know you can't believe your eyes, but that is an oil barrel pump. It is one of the things I wanted to do most. I wanted to be able to prime the engine before starting it, with weeks and months between use. I wanted more than dry bearings during the startup.
I tried three different electric pumps, but they just would not move the oil. So, as a last resort, I modified an oil drum pump. The oil comes from an adapter at the bottom of the oil pan between the pan and the OEM oil pump hose connector. The oil then feeds into two side of the block oil gallery ports. It is set up with two one-way ball joints to keep the pressure where it should be and away from the pump.
There is good resistance to pumping in the oil. After four pumps of the lever, I can hear the oil falling from the heads above into the oil pool in the pan below. It works great, so I'll take it. Eventually, I will plumb it and mount it in the cab without the lever, but with a pull nob. Pulling the plunger out moves the oil.
When you have a 1948 KW farm truck, you can get away with things like this. Anyway, that is what I tell myself.
