We’ve been every shade of busy lately. Between getting the basement refurbished at the house, getting through my day job and playing with a few side quest projects it’s been a bit hectic. If all goes well there will be more 6.5L diesel center mount turbo content next week if I can make time to get the steel pedestals built. Once I have that in hand the setup for our friend Pat should be ready for final build out. We will see what happens! Happy Friday everyone!

Sherman is in for some more work. The front brakes are locking up causing my strange shift issues. Once that is taken care of we will be doing some tune swapping to see what works best. We now have the following tunes to try in this old work horse!

Stock PROM

Quadstar Tow Tune

Buddy tune tow tune

Buddy tune 3 position switch Econ/Tow/Performance tunes

Knowing how easy it is to switch the tunes in this truck I might have to actually try to get it out and sled pull it in more than one class for science!

The optical noise filter is something that’s been a problem multiple times in my 6.5L diesel career over the past 15 years. I learned on one of our very first 6.5s what NOT to do when one of these fail. Number one? Don’t replace the injection pump and fire the parts cannon. If it’s stalling, dead pedaling, hard starting, staying stuck in gears, acting lame or sluggish and the truck has one of these still on it? Remove it and apply it to the nearest scrap bin. The optical noise filter was needed back in the day to reduce alternator and radio noise which messed with the pumps. Over the years enough has changed and replacement parts were made to basically cause these filters to be obsolete. That said, I hope this post helps some of you 6.5 guys out there having issues that seem to never be resolved.

Everyone we go out we learn something new. This was just a trip down memory lane pulling a 4wd 6.5 for the first time since 2019.

It’s been a long time since I’ve put a 6.5 on the track. Today we took Sherman to Deerfield community days and made a hook. It upshifted to second even with the lever in “1” and it killed our momentum in an otherwise solid start to a pass. It was a great time for us and it was great getting back in the seat in a dinosaur diesel. If we can sort this shift issue out I think we have a chance for some decent hooks in its future.

It’s that time of year for killer sunset views and getting tractors around to knock hay down. Tonight the bine repairs were completed and we did a short test run with the 44 M. Tomorrow I’ll swap it into the 400 and drag it down to GSC to cut here first. That M needs some rear tires before it’s ready to go between fields but, it did a solid job as the test mule tonight!

Sherman left the barn yard on an adventure to get fuel, hydraulic lines and tractor parts. This was its first adventure after the hours of revival. The truck isn’t perfect yet but it starts up and goes down the road! Now to get some miles on it and start seeing what other bugs pop up…

The turbo drain is mocked up and we test fit the turbo and pedestal in the truck today! It was definitely great seeing it will fit and the hood will close. Now to keep plugging away making pieces!
