Here are a couple of types of repairs and situations where you should avoid DIY maintenance and instead hire a professional:

Anything safety-related: For any components involving the safety of the vehicle, you should go to professionals who have the specialized experience to install them correctly

Complex or large-scale repairs (such as steering racks): Larger jobs are highly risky for untrained people. I had a customer who attempted to replace a steering rack themselves and ended up bringing the vehicle to the shop with half the car disassembled and a bucket of bolts

Repairs requiring specialized precision (such as wheel torquing): A seemingly simple task done incorrectly can lead to massive damage. I also had a customer who faced a $2,200 repair bill because they did not torque their wheels correctly

Any job where you lack confidence, comfort, or proper tools: If you feel uncomfortable, find yourself needing to do excessive research or references, or do not have the proper tools to complete the work safely, you should take your car to a service shop
