YouTube channel Studio Hotrods built a GPS-triggered device designed to hide a vehicle’s license plate from Flock Safety’s AI-powered license plate cameras, which are installed along many US streets and log every passing vehicle.

Groups including the ACLU and EFF oppose the cameras over privacy concerns. The host said, “It really kind of ticks me off the fact that I got to build devices like this.”

The device uses standard Arduino hardware, a GPS module, and an SD card of Flock camera locations.

When the car enters a camera zone, it cuts power for half a second, turning a plate cover opaque.

The creator said the proof of concept worked, though timing needs fine-tuning, and that its legality is unclear.
