A motorcycle can be completely hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot, and motorcyclists are legally entitled to use a full lane.

Safety tip: Before changing lanes, signal, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder. Allow at least three to four seconds of following distance behind a motorcycle.

🌧️ Did You Know?

In North Carolina, headlights and rear lights must be on when windshield wipers are being used because of rain, fog, smoke, sleet or snow. Intermittent wiper use during light mist is excluded.

Safety tip: Don’t depend on daytime running lights—they may not illuminate your rear lights. Turn on your full headlights so others can see you.

🚗 Did You Know?

A seat belt works best when the lap portion rests low across your hips—not your stomach—and the shoulder belt crosses the middle of your chest.

Safety tip: Never place the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm. Proper positioning helps your pelvis and rib cage absorb crash forces.

Sitting too close to the steering wheel can increase the risk of injury when an airbag deploys. NHTSA recommends keeping at least 10 inches between your breastbone and the center of the steering wheel.

Safety tip: Move the seat back while keeping the pedals within comfortable reach, sit upright and always wear your seat belt.

😴 Did You Know?

A “microsleep” can last four or five seconds. At 55 mph, your vehicle can travel more than 100 yards while you’re briefly unconscious. Coffee alone may not prevent this.

Safety tip: If you become sleepy, pull over somewhere safe. NHTSA recommends a short 20-minute nap; proper sleep is the only reliable prevention.

🚌 Did You Know?

In North Carolina, a school bus’s yellow flashing lights mean it is preparing to stop—slow down and get ready to stop. When its red lights flash and stop arm extends, remain stopped until the lights stop, the arm retracts and the bus begins moving.

Safety tip: Expect children to cross unexpectedly and never pass a stopped school bus.

Your vehicle’s recommended tire pressure is on the driver’s door label or in the owner’s manual—not the tire’s sidewall.

🚗 Did You Know?

Under North Carolina’s Move Over Law, drivers approaching a stopped emergency or public-service vehicle with flashing lights must move one lane away when it is safe. If changing lanes is unsafe or impossible, drivers must slow down considerably and be prepared to stop.

The law includes police vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks, utility trucks and NCDOT vehicles.
