In February of 1967, a young Army veteran named Win Berteau walked into a factory owned Mack branch at 110 E. Airline Highway in Kenner and started what would become nearly six decades in the Mack Trucks world.
The reason he walked through those doors in the first place was because his cousin, Ricky, who already worked at Mack Trucks, told him to apply. Back then, things were different. Men came to work in white shirts and ties. Mack dealerships were still owned directly by the manufacturer itself. The shop labor rate was $6 an hour, mechanics made $2.62 an hour, and nobody could have imagined how much both the trucking industry and New Orleans would change over the next 59 years.
But through all of it, one thing stayed remarkably consistent: Mr. Win.
Most people around our dealership simply know him as “Mr. Win.” If you’ve worked with him, you know exactly the kind of man he is. Meticulous. Matter of fact. The kind of person who still does certain things “the old way” because, frankly, the old way still works. The kind of person who remembers names, remembers parts, remembers stories, and somehow still outworks people half his age.
Over the years, he has done just about everything imaginable in a dealership. Shop clerk. Warranty administrator. Payroll clerk. Office manager. Controller. Parts counter. Outside parts sales. Inventory clerk. If there was a job that needed to be done, chances are Mr. Win did it at some point.
What makes his story even more incredible is that he didn’t just stay with one company name on a sign. He lived through the entire evolution of Mack in the New Orleans area itself.
From Mack Trucks, Inc. in Kenner, to New Orleans Mack Trucks, to Delta Mack in Norco, to Performance Truck, to Old River, to Parish Truck Sales just weeks before Hurricane Katrina, and eventually back to Old River in 2016. Different owners. Different buildings. Different systems. Different generations of trucks. But somehow, through all the change, Mr. Win remained part of the foundation.
This month, we have the privilege of celebrating another milestone: Mr. Win’s 10-year anniversary with Old River and an incredible 59 years in the Mack business.
That’s 59 years of showing up. 59 years of adapting through ownership changes, new technology, hurricanes, new generations of employees, and an industry that looks nothing like it did in 1967.
Congratulations, Mr. Win. Thank you for nearly six decades of dedication, craftsmanship, and quiet leadership. We’re honored to be a small part of your story and grateful that your Mack story is still being written.
