Thursday night carb fun, what a beauty! This 4776 600 cfm double pumper from 30+ years ago was used briefly and traded in a few years ago after some extended time off. Said it just ran rough no matter what. Got to the secondary metering block and found two of the four emulsion jets missing, neat! Repaired that factory flaw, bent the secondary link about 132 degrees so the throttle blades fully open at WOT, upgraded the accelerator pump setup, and the standard parts. The customer asked for a manual choke, was lucky to have one that matched the carb so well. Blue pump gaskets for this one, going to Canada where it will unfortunately be fueled with an ethanol blend. Not as bad as California! Minnesota’s greatest attribute is that 91 octane non-ethanol non-oxygenated fuel is readily available here. Many of my carb peers across the country do not have it this good, definitely blessed in this regard here!

Unlike yesterday's two awesome components, most vintage parts do not get refit for another 50 years of service, big surprise! Like this morning’s 150 lb. batch brought to the recyclers. Been doing this as I get through all the old carbs. Porous and/or ruined main bodies, cracked or warped base plates, bowls with cracked or dented shut (that’s the way!) fuel inlets, N&S threads chopped up, porous, etc., metering blocks and other ruined parts get recycled, back to nature they say. Some defects are obvious but some require blasting, v***r honing, etc., real good cleaning to see. Sometimes what looks like an NOS part, maybe was never used, had a major casting flaw that couldn't be whittled out, etc.

Happy Weekend! Processing parts from years ago, this FuelGyvered base plate is from a disassembled Frankencarb. One of the neatest deals I've seen. Started off life as a 4781-1 base plate, now has slabbed throttle shafts with punched blades for racing cams. The custom secondary opening rate adjuster is sweet, whoever did this put lots of time and thought into it. Need to build a slayer budget racing carb with this thing!

Remembered a t**s 4780 800 cfm main body I got in trade for some resto parts. The 800 is tapered to a 1.75 bore and the ports nicely machined for the bigger bore. The transition from the venturi to the bore is unreal, the blending and smoothing must have took as long as the base plate tooling, 10 hours I bet. And it was converted to four-corner idle like the base plate. Bingo, got a carb. The main body will be colored to original. And probably use new Hollley bowls in classic gold. Maybe ATM or BLP aluminum metering blocks, we'll see, someday when I get around to it, it's going to incinerate a lot of atmosphere.

Truckin. The Holley 1850 four-barrel 600 cfm carb was introduced in the late 1950s, closer to the 1800s than now. Millions of Holley type carbs later and still going strong. These will outlast the Voyager space probes! Especially this one. A little rebuild action, castings recolored to original or polished, some new service parts including a new accelerator pump, floats, and other hardware that I don't trust after this many decades, and set up nice like. Billet aluminum or annular boosters aren't the only ways to upgrade. Combo vintage and new parts fuel bowl repair kit for a customer to replace a set with a busted fuel inlet. And no external float adjustment on those bowls, so good time for an upgrade to the easy float adjustment of the mid 1960s and beyond! The bowls and pump are 50+ years old and look flawless still. New float and spring, needle and seat, pump gasket and spring, and gasket mating surfaces are trued up.

Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins did not build the most powerful Pro Stock engine. He built the smartest one. When the NHRA introduced the Pro Stock class in 1970, there was no established formula for success. No proven engine combinations, no decades of development, and no rulebook for building a winning Pro Stock powerplant. Jenkins saw that uncertainty as an opportunity, transforming the small-block Chevrolet into a rolling engineering laboratory.

His 1970 Camaro was far more than a race car. It was a continuous development platform. Jenkins experimented with dry-sump lubrication systems at a time when most competitors still relied on conventional wet-sump oil pans. He refined piston preparation techniques to reduce friction and improve ring sealing, developed slick-shift transmission setups to minimize shift times, and tuned fuel delivery with a level of precision that many engine builders considered excessive. Many of the concepts that later became standard practice in Pro Stock were first pioneered—or rigorously proven—through Jenkins' relentless experimentation.

What separated Jenkins from his rivals was his engineering philosophy. While many teams focused solely on maximizing peak horsepower, Jenkins prioritized consistency and reliability. He wanted an engine that produced identical performance from the first run of the day to the last, surviving repeated high-RPM launches without sacrificing durability. He understood that a slightly less powerful engine capable of making every pass was ultimately more competitive than a more powerful engine that failed after only a few runs.

His approach quickly paid dividends. Featured in *Hot Rod* magazine in July 1970, Jenkins' Camaro backed up its technical innovation with victories in major Pro Stock events. Those successes demonstrated that winning required far more than raw horsepower. Oil control, valvetrain stability, combustion efficiency, and meticulous attention to detail became just as important as airflow and displacement.

Jenkins' influence extended well beyond his own race program. Many of the engineering principles he championed—including optimized oil drain-back, precise piston-to-wall clearances for superior ring seal, and cylinder-by-cylinder fuel calibration—became foundational practices for future generations of Pro Stock engine builders. His methods helped define the technical standards that continue to shape the class today.

Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins did more than build fast engines. He transformed engine building into a science. His 1970 Camaro was not simply one of the first great Pro Stock race cars—it became the blueprint for an entire category of motorsport, proving that intelligence, precision, and relentless development could outperform brute horsepower alone.

Gee, wonder if this 1850 being disassembled here with a 3.5 power valve in it was on a tunnel ram 😄. Clean on the inside, the power valve still seems okay, gave it the sucky sucky test and did pretty well, talk about getting a taste for hotrodding. Small carbs make big power, too!
