And let's be honest, they are pretty dang fun to drive from 0 to 60mph in 3 seconds. We want to hear from you. Please comment below with your thoughts and questions about EV's.

Tech Tip Tuesday
Checking Your Fluids Regularly
All the fluids found in your car are the literal life blood that allow it to run. Checking the fluid level regularly can alert you to potential problems and can mean the difference between a $100 repair and a $6000 repair.
Here is a list of common fluids found under the hood:
1. Engine oil
2. Transmission fluid
3. Brake fluid
4. Power steering fluid
5. Coolant
6. Windshield washer fluid
Understanding where, how and when to check these fluids is critical to keeping your vehicle lasting as long as possible. Gone are the days when it's as easy as pulling a dipstick to check most of your fluids. Many transmissions do not even have a dipstick. If you are unsure how to check all the fluids on your car please give us a call or stop on by and we will show you for FREE.

Tough Talk Thursday
Diagnostic Fee
For some reason "diagnostic fee" has become a buzz word/phrase, making people cringe or cry. We get it! We definetly live in a word of hidden fees and upcharges all around us. However, a diagnostic fee is not in the same family as those "other" fees we see out there. In fact, the most important dollars you give to a shop should be for diagnostic because if that is done correctly then it can save the customer money, time and frustration. But, done wrong and cuss words prevail.
In order to properly diagnose a vehicle's issues it requires experience, specialized tools and expensive information, not to mention all the training and study the technician has payed for and gone through. It can require time to research and understand ever changing systems on cars. With that in mind, in a typical shop the diagnosing of vehicles is placed on the shoulders of the most seasoned and knowledgeable technician. In fact in many shops there is a technician that is dedicated to just diagnosing.
So why has the diagnostic fee become so dreaded? One idea is that part stores like Oriellys and Autozone and Advanced claim they can diagnose your car for free just by plugging in their scanner. If this was Mythbusters that ideology would be "Busted". The code that has triggered the light to come on is vague at best and only indicates a system or sensor that "could" be causing the issue. Example: A 2010 Dodge 2500 comes into the shop with the check-engine light on for a fault with the CKP ( crankshaft position sensor). The customer has taken it to the above named part stores and thus has replaced the CKP, CMP, connectors and some cables because the part stores "diagnosed" it for free. A trained, experienced technician then spends the appropriate time and attention to properly diagnose the issue. He finds that the alternator is bad, sending AC current back through the electrical system causing the computer to think there is an issue with the CKP. The shop replaces the alternator and verifies the issue is resolved.
It would be really convenient to just simply plug in a tool and the diagnostics is all taken care of by a computer. However, with all the modules, sensors, wires and systems on cars today proper diagnosing is even more complex then before.

We would love to hear your thoughts and feelings on this topic. Please comment below or give us a call.

Tech Tip Tuesday
Let's talk engine oil viscosity
Ever wonder what those numbers on your engine oil bottle mean? Like 10W-30, 5W-30, 5W-20, or even 0W-20.They indicate the oil's viscosity, or it's thickness and flow properties. For example: 10W-30. The "10W" is the oils viscocity (or how easily it flows) in cold temperatures. The "30" is the oils viscocity at operating temperature (usually around 200 degrees).
Choosing the right viscocity is crucial for your engines health and longevity. Too thick of oil it won't flow to critical parts of the engine. Too thin and it won't provide adequate lubrication when hot.
It's critical that the correct viscocity of oil is used with your engine. If you are unsure about the right oil and type please give us a call and we'll gladly answer all your questions.

Tough-Talk Thursday
Lets Talk about the Flat-Rate System.
In a nutshell the flat-rate system is how most shops determine the labor time for each job. The labor times are acquired usually from one of 2 main industry standard sources (Prodemand or AllData). These companies use internal testing and surveys to acquire the labor times.
For example. If a water pump needs to be replaced on a Ford Focus a shop will look up the labor time for this repair and that is what is charged to the customer and also what the technician is paid for regardless of how much time the technician actually takes.
So where is the drama with this system? Let’s look at this from both the shops and customers perspective
Shop’s:
Pros:
-Allows shops to make and give quotes to customers that are reasonably accurate.
-Incentivises technicians to work efficiently because they can make more money if they do the repair faster than flat-rate time.
-It helps shops stay competitive
Cons:
-Flat-rate does not account for rust, seized bolts, silicone, and other wear and tear due to age and environment. (The labor times are derived from working on brand new vehicles.)
-Shop will lose money when a technician takes longer to do the repair
-Sometimes the labor time is extremely wrong as to the job being done.
Customer:
Pros:
-Can receive an accurate quote before repair to help with decisions
-Customers usually do not have to pay more if the repair takes longer than flat-rate time
Cons:
-Customers feel that if the repair is done faster than the quoted time they should not have to pay the difference.
-When a shop runs into unexpected factors with the repair and need to adjust the labor time this can cause confusion and frustration

So is the flat-rate system perfect? Absolutely not! But we’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas on making the system better or doing something different.
Let's have a responsable debate/conversation in the comments.

Tech-Tip Tuesday!
All about air filters
Just like you need clean air to breathe, your cars engine needs clean air to perform at its best. A clogged air filter can reduce engine performance and fuel economy.
Sometimes it can be difficult to know when to replace the airfilter. A simple trick we use is hold the filter up to a light (the sun or a flashlight works great to) if you can see the light through the filter than you should be good to still use it. However, if no light shines through than it's time to replace it.
Stay safe out there!!!
