The latest rescue
A number of weeks ago a woman named Julie posted on one of the related pages that she had a Spitfire that she was looking to find a new home for. I think there was maybe one or two pictures and not much more information other than location. After reaching out to her and exchanging messages, we were finally able to connect on the phone. She was the original owner having purchased the car from Haward Union Jack in 1981. The car had been sitting in her driveway for over ten years and the city had given her notice that it needed to be removed or a substantial fine would be levied. I was able to rescue it several days before that was going to happen. The keys had been misplaced so I had to remove the ignition switch. Good thing I remembered my Dremel. Surprisingly, the tires held air and the brakes weren't locked up. Much to my delight, I discovered that it is fitted with an overdrive transmission and the hardtop is a decent color match for my 74. In the boot I found a completely usable soft top and frame. While I was searching for the ignition switch with keys that I knew I had, I found a box that has everything to rebuild the clutch and brake systems!
The box and labels are marked LMC, so this would have been when Victoria British was still in business. I believe I purchased these parts for a 78 that ended up going to Sri Lanka along with a 74 and a 62 Austin Healey Sprite. I nearly passed on this car, but after speaking with Julie several times, hearing how much it has meant to her, and knowing it was destined for a wrecking yard if I didn't rescue it, I'm glad I made the effort. She's already looking much better and I have front and marker lamps functional. Everything is as it should be under the bonnet. The oil in the sump is clean. I put Marvel Mystery Oil down the cylinders and have been letting it soak. The plugs are uniform and look like the car was running good. Hmm, what should I try next?๐ค
