🔧 REAL MERCEDES-BENZ DIAGNOSTIC CASE
Recently, a Mercedes-Benz came into our shop with a recurring problem: the battery would go dead after the vehicle sat for a period of time.
The battery and charging system initially appeared to operate normally, but further testing revealed an excessive 2+ amp parasitic battery draw while the vehicle was turned off.
Instead of guessing and replacing parts, we performed systematic electrical testing and circuit isolation to find the actual source of the problem.
🔍 We Found TWO Separate Problems:
1️⃣ Alternator — Primary Parasitic Draw
The alternator was charging normally while the engine was running, but internally drawing excessive current after the vehicle was shut off.
This is the type of problem that can easily be missed by a basic charging-system test.
After replacing the alternator, the charging system returned to normal and the majority of the battery drain was eliminated.
But we didn't stop there.
Further testing showed that the vehicle still had more parasitic draw than it should.
2️⃣ Overhead Control Panel (OCP) — Secondary Parasitic Draw
By continuing to isolate individual circuits, we identified another electrical draw coming from the vehicle's overhead control system.
After completing the repair and allowing the vehicle to fully enter sleep mode, we performed a final verification.
✅ FINAL RESULT: APPROXIMATELY 35 mA
The vehicle went from an abnormal 2+ amp battery draw to approximately 35 mA in sleep mode — within an acceptable range.
Problem found.
Problem repaired.
Repair verified.
🔍 WE DIAGNOSE — NOT GUESS.
Modern German vehicles contain dozens of interconnected electronic control modules.
A dead battery doesn't always mean the battery is bad.
A charging alternator doesn't always mean the alternator is good.
And a fault code doesn't always mean the component named in that code needs to be replaced.
