The Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow began construction in 1901, the same year its namesake, The Virginian by Owen Wister, was first published. The novel is considered the first western novel and takes place in Medicine Bow. It would fuel years of tourism to the small town both before the Lincoln Highway and after. It's existence in Medicine Bow was a deciding factor in the Lincoln Highway's route through the small town. The hotel would be completed in 1911 and become a landmark for travelers on the Lincoln Highway. Upon completion, it was the biggest hotel between Denver and Salt Lake City. The Virginian was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
