I would like to address what you should demand when you need a brake job. There are many misconceptions as to what this service should include. After 45 years in the automobile repair business and many technology changes this is a list of what the modern vehicle will need when the brakes are replaced.
1. A premium brake pad should be used.
Why would you replace the pad with an inferior material that will give you a diminished stopping ability?
2. Rotors - They must be replaced or turned.
I would normally just replace the rotors. The modern automobile currently has rotors that have much less thickness than vehicles of the past. This was done to make the car as light as possible to aid in fuel economy standards. It may not seem like much on one car but multiplied over the manufacturers entire vehicle production it is huge! As a result there is not much room for turning rotors because the rotor will become too thin and warp pre maturely. the other problem is rust build up on the rotor.
3. The hub must be cleaned of any rust build up and treated with an anti seize compound to prevent further rust build up.
4. The rotor is then installed and torqued to the manufacturers specification. It then must be checked with a dial indicator. If there is variation it must be indexed or replaced. More than .002 variation will result in material build up and cause pedal pulsation.
5. The pad mounting bracket must be cleaned and lubricated with a premium brake lubricant. Inspect all rubber seals and lubricate all pins to insure free movement.
6. Install pads and use a brake grease on the back of the pad on any area that will contact metal. All pad hardware should be replaced.
7. Install the wheels and torque to the manufacturers spec.

As you can see there are many steps and procedures that must be followed when performing a brake replacement. Failure to follow these procedures will result in a substandard job and premature failure.

Turns out that the SEMA Show isn’t the only automotive showcase that annually overflows the Las Vegas Convention Center. This past week, the convention center’s North Hall has been the epicenter of the automotive world as automakers, their suppliers and even some newcomers displayed their visions for our drive into the future.

The Car Care Council has a number of tips for commuters to help ensure their trips to and from work are as enjoyable and worry-free as possible.

Commutes to work are longer than ever, according to the most recent U.S. Census, with the average commute time up 20 percent since the Census began tracking this data in 1980. The more time we spend in our cars, the more important it becomes to make sure our vehicles are comfortable and safe places....
