Throwback Tuesday!
Some vehicles come and go. A few leave a lasting impression.

This was my 1993 Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ81V. Right-hand drive, factory turbo diesel I imported directly from Japan. Built during Toyota’s golden era, when durability came first and complexity came second.

I’ve owned a lot of cool vehicles over the years, but this one was different. The 1HD-T diesel is a game changer in the 80 series. This one was a 5 year tear down and built it back build. Paint and body done by the lockers, lift, bumpers, racks, wheels and tires done by
This one was sweet.
Looking back, I probably should have kept this one. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned after buying and selling thousands of vehicles over the last 30 years, it’s that there’s always one that gets away. But I sold it to an awesome new local owner who loves it as much or more than I did and has continued to build it out!

As an old-school Toyota guy, I’ve got to admit… the new 6th Gen 4Runner has grown on me.

What do I like? First and foremost they are built in Japan. Next, new turbo engine has impressive power and fuel economy, and the interior is light years ahead of anything Toyota has ever put in a 4Runner. Comfortable, quiet, loaded with technology, and a fantastic daily driver.

What don’t I like? Let’s be honest… they look a little soft in stock form.

So we fixed that.

This Heritage Blue TRD Off-Road Premium got a 3-inch lift, TRD Pro wheels, and 285/70R18 BFGoodrich tires, and now it finally looks the way a 4Runner should.

Will it ever be as reliable as a 3rd Gen? No it won’t. But that’s not Toyota’s fault. With modern crash standards, emissions requirements, fuel economy regulations, cameras, sensors, computers, and technology packed into every new vehicle, it’s simply impossible to build a vehicle as simple as a 1996-2002 4Runner today.

That said, I still believe Toyota builds the best trucks and SUVs on the road, and the new 4Runner is the best option in its class.

38 years apart… and somehow the recipe still works.

On one side, my 1987 Toyota Turbo Pickup:
• Turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder
• 5-speed manual
• Built in Japan
• 4WD
• Simple, mechanical, and built like an anvil

On the other side, a 2025 4Runner Off-Road Premium:
• Turbocharged 2.4L four-cylinder
• Built in Japan
• 4WD
• Packed with technology, safety systems, cameras, and creature comforts

Both have turbo 2.4s. Both are four-wheel-drive. Both were built in Japan. Both have some of the most comfortable seats Toyota has ever put in a vehicle.

Yet what a difference 38 years makes.

One was designed with a slide rule and a toolbox. The other with supercomputers and dozens of sensors. One has crank windows and simplicity. The other can practically drive itself. Different eras, different missions, but both unmistakably Toyota.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Which one are you taking home: the old-school turbo pickup or the brand-new 4Runner?

The truck I’ve been hunting for finally showed up…

1999 Chevrolet K2500 Crew Cab Short Bed 4x4 with the legendary 454 Big Block. If you were a kid in the ‘90s, you know exactly what this truck is. This was the truck all the cool old guys drove, well at least I thought they were cool…

I found this one in California, and it’s a really solid, honest truck with great bones. Like any old GM, it’s got a few of the usual suspects that need attention. We’ll be knocking out the cracked exhaust manifold and broken studs, replacing the idler arm and pitman arm, and taking care of a few other common GMT400 quirks along the way.

New Method wheels and BFGs are already on the way. The rear exit exhaust is going away stat . And that camper shell… let’s just say its future is looking uncertain.

Stay tuned. This one is getting the full Tyacke Motors treatment.

Some trucks are special and heard to let go! This one checks both boxes.

1989 Toyota Pickup SR5 Deluxe 4x4 • 22RE • 5-Speed • Single Cab Long Bed

A configuration that was rare when it was new and hard to find today. Single-owner, lifetime San Diego, California truck showing just 138,000 original miles and preserved exactly the way we love to find them.

Original paint. Original body panels. Original VIN stickers. White over blue and as honest as they come. The undercarriage and frame are exceptionally clean, completely free from the rust and corrosion that has claimed so many of these trucks over the years.

Powered by Toyota’s legendary 22RE four-cylinder backed by a 5-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drive, it runs and drives just like it should. Ice-cold A/C, smooth on the road, and ready for another few hundred thousand miles.

Finding a Toyota pickup this original, this clean, and with this kind of California pedigree is becoming nearly impossible. This is exactly why we travel thousands of miles and look at thousands of vehicles every year—to find the 1% of the 1%.

Just another Tyacke Motors classic.

Only 34k Original Miles

This Super White Tacoma is the definition of a unicorn. A lifetime Southern California truck with just 34K miles, a 6-speed manual gearbox, and the kind of condition that makes truck enthusiasts stop scrolling.

Paint, body, interior, frame, and undercarriage are all exceptionally clean. No rust, no corrosion, no excuses. Just a meticulously cared-for Tacoma that has spent its entire life in the California sun.

Finding a clean third-generation Tacoma is easy. Finding a low-mile, Southern California, 6-speed manual TRD Off-Road in this kind of condition is a completely different story.

The 930 got new shoes today. I’ve been looking for a set of these wheels for a long time and finally got them. They look great. There’s just one problem… I really need to put some spacers on the front…. GO WIDE BABY!!

Tacoma Wednesday done right.

2013 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed TRD Sport finished in Magnetic Gray Metallic over Graphite cloth interior. Two-owner truck that spent the majority of its life in Texas and has covered just 26,000 original miles since new.

Finding a clean second-generation Tacoma is getting difficult. Finding a Double Cab Long Bed TRD Sport with only 26,000 miles is nearly impossible. Paint, body, interior, and undercarriage are all in exceptional condition, exactly what you would expect from a lifetime southern truck that has been meticulously cared for.

Tastefully optioned, exceptionally clean, and showing the kind of originality and condition that made us buy it in the first place. This is the kind of Tacoma we search the country for.

Just another Tyacke Motors special.

We sell them because we love them. Toyota Kings. Remember if I won’t park it in my own driveway I won’t sell it.

WHO EANTS TO SEE HOW ITS DONE??!! This is where it all begins….2003 Toyota Tacoma Extra Cab 4x4, 3.4L V6, 5-speed manual, with only 80,000 original miles. Two-owner, lifetime Southern California truck that is absolutely phenomenal inside, outside, and underneath.
People often ask why our trucks are priced the way they are. The answer is simple: if you want the best, you have to pay for the best. Trucks like this are the 1% of the 1%—the kind that only come around once in a while. Rust-free, unmodified, exceptionally well cared for, and in the kind of condition that’s nearly impossible to find today.
This video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the buying process and shows where it all begins. We sort through hundreds of vehicles to find the handful that meet the Tyacke Motors standard.
The hunt never stops.
We sell them because we love them. Toyota and Lexus are what we choose to drive every day, and they’re what we know best. If I wouldn’t park it in my own driveway, I won’t buy it.
