Today was a challenging day that reminded me of God's grace and protection for those who seek him out. I made a routine trip to Bend to pick up my newest acquisition. A 1967 Camaro RS/SS with 32k original miles. On the way home I made a stop and found my battery was dead, but was able to get a jump and everything seemed okay. I left Bend and soon my ABS light came on and my windows stopped working. I knew I had a problem, so I called ahead to my good friends at Priority Diesel in Prineville, who said they would be waiting. Another ten miles later my gauges stop working and my air bag light came on. On a wing and a prayer I rolled into Priority Diesel, in the afternoon before the holiday, where my truck promptly died at the front door. With one tech still around they swapped out my questionable batteries and determined my alternator had failed. If that was it, fine. I consider myself fortunate, but while walking around my truck and trailer, checking lights, I noticed something a bit more concerning. The passenger side front axle wheel on my trailer was missing. The mangled spindle told the story. This is where I decided I was not just fortunate, but under God's devine protection. The best part of this blessing was that I was carrying a spare ride, which brought me home in style.

Finally got the Jeep back on the road. It all started with a pop, backfire, and then nothing, only to find my number 5 cylinder was dead. Pulled the head, decked it, replaced a valve and ground the others, as well as the seats. Put everything back together and nothing. No spark. The Prestolight distributor had taken a dump. I learned that these early electronic distributors are junk and you can't get replacements. As much as I wanted to keep the Jeep stock, and after consulting friends much smarter than I, I bought a Petronix distributor. Best move ever! Fired up and runs better than I can ever remember, but the drama continued. After the first start up she overheated. I removed the thermostat, tested it and found it appears to work. I reassembled the housing without it and it now runs perfectly, at least after four miles of dirt roads. This was a big side track this summer, but now we're back to cruising in the sun.
