Radiator replacement in a 30 year old L8000 Ford. One thing Ford has going for them is their radiators are quick and easy to pull. In my area there are still many Ford L8000s and L9000s in use. Some are looking pretty tough but still put in an honest day. After 30 years this radiator was deteriorated enough that repairing wasn't feasable.Customer opted for a new radiator and while we have everything off it will get all new hoses. This old truck will soon be ready to get back to work hauling this years crops.

On today's episode of how I soiled my pants. . . The customer was harvesting corn when the front axle snapped off the final drive. As you can see it has been cracked for quite awhile before it finally gave up. Customer was very lucky this didnt break while going down the road or on a hillside. This lift was quite a bit easier since the platform was resting on the tire. The first lift sunk a 6x6 completely in the ground. After placing another 6x6 on top of the already sunk block, it also was pushed completely in the dirt. So after 12" of block was buried, we finally had a base to jack off of. With a couple jacks and lots of blocks, we were able to raise and stabilize it so the broken final drive could be removed. Another trip to Franzens and we started putting this old iron back together. All in all an easy quick repair so the customer could get back to business.

Had an interesting time raising this combine up after it snapped the rear spindle off while going uphill. It pretty much buried the rear spindle in the dirt. That made things a bit trickier with the cribbing. But we got it up on blocks and made short work of swapping over the broken parts with some good used parts from Franzen Family Tractor Parts. They had everything available very quickly and the customer was able to get back to harvesting.

Another day of crane appreciation. Pulled the axle out of it to replace the pivot pins and bushings. Caught the bushings just in time. Most often the bushings wear through and require machining and oversized bushings. New pins and bushings and back together she goes.

Its been a busy fall for sure. Dodging the rain and planning jobs around the weather has been the recipe for success this fall. I took advantage of a rainy day to make an upgrade in service trucks. New truck is equipped with a hydraulic compressor and a 12,000 lb crane. Both are a welcome upgrade. The crane has been put to work almost immediately. The capacity will allow for a bigger variety of jobs. As farmers are finally getting into the fields and start harvesting, please be patient and vigilant as most are going to be working longer and harder to get crops out before weather delays again. Everybody stay safe and dont hesitate to call if you need parts or service.

Seems to be the new norm lately when getting parts. It's pretty hard to stay efficient when I have to keep waiting for good quality parts to show up. It's bu****it. I hope the vendor or shipper does the right thing and stands behind their mistake. The quality of parts has gone down hill from yesteryear. They sure have hell gone in the toilet since covid drained the work force. And the small businesses are forced to swallow the problem.

Here is the difference from the old broken valve spring cap and the new cap. Not much meat left on the old cap. I bet that wouldn't have made it another month.

Working on a customers tractor. Put a new clutch and flywheel in it. I noticed there were a few leaks seeping from here and there. One was the valve cover. So I pulled the valve cover off and I decided why not run the overhead while its here. #5 intake had a gap big enough to throw a small child through it. And then I noticed something worse. The valve spring cap is just about broken enough to let the spring pull out. Bye bye piston! Fortunately this was caught in time. I guess the moral of the story is.. . . . . .everything breaks sometime. Keep your spring tight and your valve straight. Happy easter
