Avoid that sinking feeling! Literally!
First, you step on the brake pedal, and have it sink to the floor, with little to no stopping power. Presuming you get stopped, next is the realization that you need to call and wait for a tow truck. Last is the sensation of having your bank account drained considerably.

We have 3 of these cases in the shop this week alone. Rusting brake lines are the issue, caused in part, by salt solutions sprayed on the streets prior to snow. These solutions stick to the bottom of the car and don't rinse off in the rain, extending the corrosion through the summer.
You can help avoid this with a full chassis car wash (or maybe 2)after the last snow. Not the drive through gas station kind, but one that also has hot soapy water sprayed on the underside of the car or truck. This small inexpensive effort can help you avoid that sinking feeling.

ATTENTION: You may be, as I was, unaware that Illinois, due to budget issues, is not mailing license plate renewal reminders. However, you can still get a ticket if your registration is not up to date AND could be subject to a late renewal fee. A friend, at Rotary this morning, told me that he parked his car at the airport over the holidays, and came back to a $50 ticket for expired plates. CHECK YOUR LICENSE PLATE EXPIRATION NOW. Details here:

Budget gridlock in Springfield caused the Illinois secretary of state’s office to suspend mailing vehicle-registration renewal reminders.

This is starting to become an issue we should all be aware of

U.S. Sens. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., introduced the Security and Privacy in Your Car Act in July to set federal standards to secure cars while also protecting drivers' privacy.

Keep your eyes and ears open for pothole damage to your car.

Hopefully, this winter is coming to a close, but it has been brutal. Brutal on the roads and on the cars. I personally have seen at least 4 different crews this winter, filling potholes within a mile of our shop. Parking lot potholes do no damage, but if you hit one at 40mph+, it can cause damage to the car, both in the alignment or wheel bearings. Watch and listen for these symptoms:
1. Steering wheel off center. Drive straight on a flat stretch of road and glance down at the steering wheel. If it is not "centered"(off center in pic below), there is a strong possibility that your alignment has been knocked out. This could lead to excessive tire wear and more wear on the steering linkage or wheel bearings. Note: The vehicle does not have to be pulling left or right for this to be true.
2. Listen for unusual noise. If you hear a humming noise at 30mph+, that changes when you lane change left or right, there is a possibility that you have a damaged wheel bearing. Impacts can damage the bearing race surface, and further damage develops slowly from there. We have had numerous cars in recently, where the wheel bearing damage had escalated to the point of being dangerous.
As usual, if you have any questions about this, just give us a call

Colder weather ahead! We have mentioned in the past, to use the "recirculate" in very hot weather, to maximize your air conditioning. Some people don't realize that this can work in the winter also. Instead of bringing in cold air from the outside, the recirculate button changes the air flow so that the heater can keep reheating the inside air. You will find that this will give you faster and better heat in the upcoming extreme cold. Have a healthy and safe 2014 :)

Not many more days left for the family road trip. I love taking road trip, and still do although a little shorter. What was your favorite road trip or one you still want to take? Mine was 2 week starting @ Mount Rushmore and ending with a drive down the coast from Seattle with 3 little kids and pop tent camper! What a blast- Patti Are we there yet?

Yesterday, I went out to my car and measured the temperature of the steering wheel at 153 degrees!!!
2 tips to cool off that hot car:
#1. When you get in a hot car, you can turn the AC on right away, but roll the windows down and drive a block before putting them back up again. This blows out the “oven effect” and will cool the car much sooner. If you have a sunroof, open it too.
#2. Engage the “Recirculate” mode on hotter days. Sometimes this mode is labeled “Max AC” on your dash, or sometimes there is a separate button (see pic) to control the fresh air/recirculate mode (check the owner’s manual for which on your car). In Fresh Air or “Normal” mode, fresh (hot) air is brought in from the outside to ventilate the car. In Recirculate mode, the hotter outside air is blocked off and the vehicle recirculates and keeps re-cooling the inside air. This allows the system to be much more efficient and cool the interior off much faster to a lower temperature.
How do you keep cool in this weather?

Can anyone guess what car this is from?(just kidding :) )
