I am shutting down the 3-bay garage on Dorsey Lane that I have rented for the last 11 years and moving in with Charlie's Autobody on Route 9 near IBM. I'm not 21 anymore, I've had back problems for 10 years, and when I went to lift a transmission by myself on June 3rd, I thought I gave myself a hernia. The younger guys at Charlie's will be doing all the heavy lifting from now on. At 53, I just can't do it by myself anymore.

Yes, I am still rebuilding transmissions for other local shops. But I am doing it more for fun and nostalgia, not to make a living.

The new generation of Transmission Rebuilders don't even own standard tools anymore (1/2 inch wrenches and 5/8 sockets). They have no idea what a governor or valve body are. I opened up a chevy 350 trans a few weeks ago, and one of the younger guys asked where all the (electronic) solenoids were, and how the hell does the trans know when to shift?

Yes, it's a different world today.
