Technology. 2012 Dodge Charger. Customer complaint is no A/C. First I did the standard test of checking the level of Freon. Vehicle holds 1.56lbs of freon and contained 1.5lbs so no issues there. Compressor never turns on. This car has push-button and touch screen controls but instead of being switches themselves they are signals to an HVAC control module. You make a request and the module receives it, carries it out, and knows whether or not things went smoothly. It also has safeguards that older vehicles don't have. Like an Evaporator Core temperature sensor. As you can see via codes there is a problem with that sensor and it's telling the computer the Evaporator core is way colder than it should be. As a result the computer will not command the A/C Compressor on, so no A/C. That sensor is in the dash...someone is not going to be happy.

Does your vehicle have a timing belt? If you don't know you should. Timing belts synchronize the top half, known as the cylinder head(s) of the engine with the bottom half, known as the block. Timing belts do not last forever and they are one item that should be replaced BEFORE they break. Most of the vehicles that utilize a timing belt are interference engines. When the timing belt breaks, in addition to a vehicle that won't run, the valves in the head can collide with the pistons in the block. The valves will bend under the force and replacing them requires removing the head(s). If you change your timing belt during its recommended interval (normally every 60k miles), you eliminate the risk of being stranded by a broken belt and eliminate the possibility of bent valves.

Notice the belt in the photo shows no obvious signs of wear. A visual inspection would not have helped in preventing this. Besides some dried coolant, and the break, the belt "looks" fine. Better safe than sorry.

Have you had anyone tell you that the spark plugs you just bought do not need to be gapped? "These are pre-gapped, just pop them in."

Do not believe that. If the plug is a gapable plug the gap should be checked to make sure it meets the specification of your vehicle. You hear it often with these newer fine-tipped plugs with a very thin center electrode. But here is a video showing that even they can be gapped wrong out the box and adjusted. Excuse the noise at the end of the video.

Understanding and interpreting your instrument cluster. Sometimes you can save yourself some money and headache if you can catch a problem by monitoring your cluster. NOTE, the diagnostics I provide in the video are the more simplistic and common ones. Each symptom can be caused by a multitude of things, some of which I did not get into.

Also, I recently had a customer destroy a low mileage car's engine because she did not know how to interpret the gauges on the dash. Going to make a video explaining them for those who honestly don't know what each indicator is trying to tell you. Stay tuned.
