Does Barrett Lake have the toughest “gatekeeper” obstacle in the Sierra Nevada Range? I tend to think so. The gatekeeper on the Rubicon isn’t that big of a deal these days, there is a bypass for Driveline Hill on Fordyce, and The Gauntlet is pretty far into Slickrock (or towards the end depending on which way you run the trail). What am I forgetting?

Got frame flex? 🤣

Nelson Rudolph (left) and nvwiggins (right) dropping down through what is in my opinion the hardest obstacle on Barrett Lake Trail. Of course it is harder to climb than it is to drop down but it isn’t exactly easy in this direction either.

Can’t think of a better place to spend my father’s birthday than on the Rubicon. Hopefully this is the start of a tradition that I can carry on with my own son.

We had such a mild winter, as seen here by the low water crossing at Deer Valley. The dry winter and high temperatures have combined to start several fires north of Reno right now. If any of my friends need help please let me know what I can do for you.

Troubleshooting always seems so easy once you have figured out what the problem is! 🤪 I thought I was fighting v***r lock because the Land Cruiser would run fine when you started it up and only stall out after running for a sustained period of time. Turns out it was a function of a clogged fuel filter where the crud would all settle down to the bottom if you let it sit for long enough.

My buddy nvwiggins has another dope Toyota for sale. I thought after taking his Jeep to Barrett Lake he would keep this but I guess not. 🤣

It is an 88 4Runner that shows 146k on the odometer but the actual mileage is unknown since lots of parts have been changed over the years like the instrument cluster and the engine. Has an OG TOTAL CHAOS long travel kit up front that retains the torsion bars but uses a 2” bypass shock. Total Chaos LT that uses torsion bars. The rear admittedly can’t keep up with the front, it has mix and match leaf springs and white shocks. Dave has a pair of Raptor internal bypass shocks he will include for his asking price, add those and bolt on some Deavers and you are good to go. Skinny 33x10.50R15 General Grabbers on factory rims, paint matched glass fenders, ARB 4x4 Accessories - USA Bull bar, custom rear bumper with swing out tire carrier, hard and soft top. Tons of extra parts that are getting hard to find for these things.

Asking $8500 OBO. Clean title in hand, located in Elko, Nevada. Hit up nvwiggins if you are interested.

I’ll be honest, I’m not quite sure what to say in this caption. Nelson Rudolph and I had been talking all summer about wheeling together and it finally happened at Barrett Lake, but the trail was way more challenging than I had recalled. It was alway more of a challenge than I prepared Nelson for. He and his son did a great job in their American Expedition Vehicles 4xe Wrangler but the Jeep did go home with some new scars from the trail. Hopefully Nelson still wants to wheel with me in the future!

I am fortunate to hit the trail a lot, but not always with my mother! She went with me on the Rubicon this summer to celebrate my father's birthday and spread his ashes on the trail he loved so much. And we made the voyage in my father's one-owner FJ40. Check it out!

Barrett Lake went pretty much the same as the Rubicon in my dad’s FJ40. It made short work of every obstacle (despite the internet telling me I need to air down from the 14 psi in the tires). But I also had fuel delivery issues again, thus the hood on the roof in this clip to try and get heat out of the engine bay.
