How much of a priority is visibility for you and your vehicle? I feel like people get fixated on tons and 40s but seeing able to see is pretty important in rockcrawling. I think that this is one of the biggest advantages of a Jeep like Kanin Prucksakorn and Erica Prucksakorn drive over other vehicles. Jesse Haines is the only person I know though who has picked an engine based on how well he can see over and around it! 🤣 GM 60 degree V6s don’t have a good reputation for reliability but they are very compact!

This clip is from a failed attempt to climb this ledge on Slickrock. 100% driver error. I should have gone up a gear and got on the throttle sooner. I’ve alway admired guys like Lance Clifford and Chris Durham who have a knack for applying the right amount of throttle at the right time. And more importantly, getting OUT of the throttle before scattering parts.

Does American Expedition Vehicles make the nicest parts for Jeeps? And Rams and GMs and now Fords as well. I’m a big fan of what they refer to as “OEM Plus” that builds on the strengths of a platform rather than working against it. For the JL their stubby bumper and Dual Sport suspension are my faves.

I thought for sure I was going to smash this bumper when I took my dad’s Land Cruiser rockcrawling this summer. It got a couple scratches but that was it. A good reminder to myself about the things I obsess over that end up not being a problem. Whether you are overlanding/rockcrawling/cooking/fly fishing or whatever you like to do. The best to learn what you need (and what you don’t need) is to just go do the thing.

Who doesn’t love a clean CJ7? I feel like all I see is JKs and JLs these days but my first vehicle was an 86 CJ7. It wasn’t nearly as nice as this one though!

The flatfender and my dad’s Land Cruiser have very similar crawl ratios, 51:1 for the flatfender and only 33:1 for the FJ40. But the Land Cruiser crawls WAY better, even with bigger tires. That’s not only because it has an automatic transmission, but also a 468 ci Big Block that makes a ton of torque. I guess my point is, don’t get too wrapped up in crawl ratios.

How much do you use a spotter on the trail? Some people never want a spot and I’ve seen others who have someone guiding them through the entire trail. Personally I don’t use a spotter 90% of the time but if I am struggling I will usually ask a friend for help.

For some reason, off roaders love to think that whatever model they own is the last “real” one. This issue isn’t unique to Jeep owners, I see it with Land Cruiser owners as well. The JL is pretty darn good right out of the box though! After ten years we are due for another Wrangler soon, what could Jeep do to make the Wrangler even better?

The exit from Deer Valley is first place I had landed on my clutch linkage in the flatfender. It stalled and I couldn’t disengage the clutch so I had to start it in gear. Rock Hound Off Road asked me about making a guard for the clutch linkage when they made my custom skid plate but I assured him I’d never hit it. 🤦🏼‍♂️
