You know the combination…

Turn the key. Nothing.

Turn the radio and A/C off because apparently they need to mind their own business right now.

Try again.

Click. Click. Click.

Wait five seconds like the car just needs a minute to think about what it’s done.

Try again…

IT STARTS.

And instead of thinking “I should probably get that checked,” you think:

“See. It’s fine.”

No. It is not.

Clicking when you try to start?
Could be a weak battery or connection.

Cranking slower than usual?
Your battery or starting system may be warning you.

IT’S SEPTEMBER! TIME TO PUT THE A/C PROBLEMS OFF UNTIL NEXT YEAR!

You must be new to Oklahoma.

We’re entering that magical time of year when you need the heater at 7 a.m., the A/C by lunch and a tornado plan by dinner.

Meanwhile, David Payne will be worked into a frenzy trying to explain which Oklahoma state of emergency we’re experiencing during this particular 24-hour period.

96 degrees at 2:00.
Severe storms by 6:00.
Temperature drops 30 degrees overnight.

Everybody got that? Great. See you tomorrow when we do it all backwards.

Honestly, sometimes you could just drive to a different part of Oklahoma and find the weather that matches whatever is currently working in your car.

A/C out? Head north.

Heater out? Try south.

Neither one works? Just keep driving around the state. Surely you’ll find something comfortable eventually.

OR… hear us out…

We could fix the car.

A/C only gets cold when you’re driving 70?
That’s not fixed. You’ve just discovered your vehicle requires highway speeds to provide climate control.

Barely blowing?
If you have to put your hand against the vent and say “Wait… I think I feel something,” we should probably take a look.

Takes forever to cool down?
If you arrive before the cold air does, it isn’t doing you much good.

YOUR CAR DIDN’T SUDDENLY PICK UP A BAD HABIT.

Smoke coming from your vehicle?

Before you say “It only does that sometimes” like that somehow makes it better… your car is trying to tell you something.

White smoke from the exhaust?
A little v***r on a cold morning can be normal. Thick white smoke that keeps coming? Your cooling system or engine may need attention.

Blue or bluish-gray smoke?
Your engine may be burning oil. Your car shouldn’t be going through oil faster than you go through gas.

Black smoke?
Your engine may be burning too much fuel. If your vehicle looks like it’s trying out for a diesel truck-pull and it isn’t a diesel, we should probably talk. 😂

Smoke from under the hood?
That’s not the time to turn up the radio and see if it’ll make it home.

And PLEASE don’t pop the hood, stare at it for 30 seconds and announce:

“Yep. It’s definitely smoking.”

SHOULD MY CAR BE SHAKING LIKE THAT?

Short answer: No. No, it should not.

If your vehicle suddenly has more moves than you do on a Friday night, it’s trying to tell you something.

Steering wheel shaking at highway speed?
Could be tires that are out of balance, worn or damaged.

And while we’re looking at them — if your tires are balder than your ex, it’s probably time to quit pretending they’ve got another 10,000 miles left in them.

Shakes when you hit the brakes?
Could be an issue with your brakes or rotors. If your steering wheel starts doing the cha-cha every time you stop, let’s take a look.

Shaking while sitting still?
Could be an engine misfire, worn mounts or another engine issue.

Shaking when you accelerate?
Could be anything from tires and axles to drivetrain or engine problems.

Pulling to one side?
If you’re fighting the steering wheel harder than you’re fighting the Oklahoma wind, something needs attention.

And we KNOW some of y’all have figured out:

“It only shakes between 62 and 71, so I just drive 59.” 👀

That’s not a repair.

Neither is turning the radio up, holding the steering wheel tighter or telling your passenger, “Oh, it’s been doing that for months.”

YOUR VEHICLE ISN’T MARKING ITS TERRITORY.

Walk outside and find a mysterious puddle under your car?

Before you back out, avoid eye contact with it and tell yourself, “Ehhh… pretty sure that was already there.” 👀

The color might tell you what your vehicle has been trying to tell YOU.

Green, yellow, orange or pink?
Could be coolant. Your cooling system may be thirsty — and pouring more in every few days isn’t technically a repair.

Red or reddish-brown?
Could be transmission or power steering fluid. Neither one should be decorating your driveway.

Brown or black?
Could be engine oil. Your vehicle should not require you to keep a piece of cardboard underneath it everywhere you park.

Clear to light brown and slick?
Could be brake fluid. That’s a “get it checked” problem, not a “turn the radio up” problem.

Clear water?
Finally, one we might not ruin your day with. If you’ve been running the A/C, a little water underneath your vehicle can be completely normal.

So before you blame the dog, your teenager, the neighbor’s car, Mercury being in retrograde, or decide the puddle is none of your business…

WHAT’S THAT SMELL? 👀

Before you start digging under the seats looking for a missing chicken nugget from 2023… it might actually be your vehicle.

And unfortunately, Febreze is not a mechanic.

Sweet smell?
Could be coolant. Apparently antifreeze decided smelling delicious was a reasonable safety feature.

Rotten eggs?
Could be your catalytic converter or even an overheating/overcharging battery. So maybe don’t immediately blame the person sitting next to you.

Burning rubber?
Belt. Hose. Brakes. Something rubbing or overheating.
None of those improve with continued driving.

Burning oil?
Could be oil leaking onto a hot engine component.

Raw gasoline?
Nope.
That one gets checked. We are not playing “let’s see what happens.”

Fishy/electrical smell?
Unless there’s an actual fish in your vehicle, something electrical may be getting too hot.

The point is, your vehicle will usually give you a hint before things go completely sideways.

A light.

A noise.

A smell.

Sometimes all three because apparently the first two weren’t convincing enough.

And if you’ve been driving around saying…

“It’s probably fine.”

…and now it’s sitting on the side of the road being very much NOT FINE…
