Mechanical Talk Monday: Why short trips can be hard on your vehicle

Taking short trips around town may seem easier on your vehicle than long drives, but frequent short-distance driving can actually create its own type of wear. Your engine performs best once it reaches its normal operating temperature. During very short trips, the engine may shut off before it gets fully warmed up. This can allow moisture and fuel contaminants to remain in the engine oil instead of evaporating during normal operation. Short trips can also be harder on the battery because starting the engine requires a large amount of power, and a few minutes of driving may not give the alternator enough time to fully recharge it. Your exhaust system can also collect moisture when it does not get hot enough for long enough. If most of your driving consists of short trips, regular oil changes, battery inspections, and routine maintenance become especially important. Even though the mileage may stay low, your vehicle is still experiencing wear every time it starts, stops, heats up, and cools back down.

When people think about brake maintenance, brake pads and rotors usually come to mind first, but brake fluid is just as important. Brake fluid transfers the pressure you apply to the brake pedal through the hydraulic system so the brakes can slow or stop your vehicle. Over time, brake fluid can absorb moisture from the air. Too much moisture can lower the fluid’s boiling point, reduce braking performance, and contribute to corrosion inside brake lines, calipers, and other components. Warning signs can include a soft or spongy brake pedal, changes in braking response, or a brake warning light. Brake fluid should be inspected periodically for its level and condition, and some vehicles require it to be replaced at certain intervals. Maintaining clean, properly filled brake fluid helps protect the braking system and keeps your vehicle responding the way it should when you need to stop.

Wheel bearings allow your wheels to rotate smoothly while supporting the weight of your vehicle. They are designed to last a long time, but heat, potholes, rough roads, water, and normal wear can eventually cause them to fail. One of the most common signs of a worn wheel bearing is a humming, growling, or grinding noise that becomes louder as your speed increases. You may also notice vibration in the steering wheel, looseness in the wheel, uneven tire wear, or changes in how the vehicle handles. Since wheel bearings are connected to your vehicle’s wheel and suspension system, ignoring a damaged bearing can cause additional wear and create a serious safety issue. If you notice an unusual noise coming from one corner of your vehicle, especially while turning or driving at highway speeds, it is a good idea to have it inspected.

Why your serpentine belt matters

Your serpentine belt is a simple part that has a big job. It helps power several important components under the hood, which may include your alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and A/C compressor. Because it is constantly moving while the engine is running, the belt naturally wears down over time. Cracks, fraying, glazing, or stretching can eventually cause it to slip or break. You may notice squealing noises when starting your vehicle, difficulty steering, overheating, weak A/C performance, or a battery warning light. If the belt breaks completely, your vehicle may quickly become undrivable and could even overheat. Having the serpentine belt inspected during routine maintenance is an easy way to catch wear before it turns into an unexpected roadside problem.
