Your car can feel slower in the mountains because higher elevations have thinner air and less oxygen.

Engines need oxygen to burn fuel and create power. As elevation increases, less oxygen enters the engine, which can mean less power, slower acceleration, and reduced performance, especially in naturally aspirated vehicles.

Quick fact: Naturally aspirated engines can lose roughly 3% of their power for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Turbocharged engines are usually less affected because the turbo helps push more air into the engine.
