A rust spot on the outside of a classic Volkswagen may not show the full extent of the damage. Corrosion can begin inside seams and enclosed areas, leaving nearby metal thinner than it appears.

Before choosing a patch panel, inspect the reverse side whenever possible and check the surrounding steel for pitting or additional perforation. A larger replacement section may provide a more complete repair when the damage extends beyond the visible hole.
