🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This month, we stand with everyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer.

We honor those who are fighting.
We celebrate the survivors.
We remember those we've lost.
And we recognize the families, friends, caregivers and loved ones who stand beside them.

Breast cancer can affect both women and men, and awareness matters. October is an important reminder to know your body, understand your personal risk, and talk with your healthcare provider about screening that's appropriate for you.

From our family at H. Smith Automotive to yours, we stand together in hope, strength and community. 🩷

HONOR THE FIGHT. CELEBRATE SURVIVORS. REMEMBER THOSE WE'VE LOST.

🔧 ASK A TECHNICIAN

Q: Why does my car shake when I'm stopped at a red light?

If your vehicle suddenly feels like it's vibrating or shaking while you're sitting at a stop, there isn't just one possible answer.

It could be something relatively simple—or it could be a clue that something needs attention.

A rough idle can be related to things like the engine's air/fuel mixture, ignition system, vacuum leaks, worn engine mounts, or other mechanical or electronic issues.

One thing we don't recommend?

👉 Start replacing parts based on a guess.

The way the vehicle behaves, when the vibration occurs, whether the A/C is running, RPM changes, warning lights and diagnostic testing all help a technician narrow down the actual cause.

If your car suddenly develops a new shake or vibration, that's worth paying attention to.

🚗✨ FUN FACTS WITH JAX

Have you ever wondered what those little lines across your rear window actually do?

They're not just part of the glass. Those thin lines are electrical heating elements that make up your rear-window defroster.

When you turn the rear defroster on, electricity passes through the grid, creating a small amount of heat that helps clear fog, condensation and frost from the glass.

And here's something you may not know:

Those lines can actually be damaged. Scraping the inside of the glass, removing tint or decals, or accidentally scratching the grid can break the electrical path—sometimes leaving one section of your window that won't clear properly.

So yes... your rear window is basically wearing a tiny electric blanket. 😂

🐾— Wait, no paw this time! Fun Fact from Jax. 😉

💰 SAVE MONEY MONDAY

You may not notice an alignment problem right away—but your tires might.

When your vehicle is out of alignment, your tires can begin wearing unevenly and prematurely. By the time the wear becomes obvious, you may have already shortened the life of an otherwise good set of tires.

A few things to watch for:

Your vehicle pulls or drifts to one side
The steering wheel sits off-center
Uneven wear along the inside or outside of a tire
Steering feels different than it normally does

And hitting a pothole, curb or road debris can sometimes knock things out of alignment without creating an obvious problem immediately.

💡 The money-saving part? Catching the issue early may help you get more life out of the tires you've already paid for.

If something feels different, have it checked before assuming you need new tires.

🔧 Some shops like the easy ones. We like the interesting ones.

The strange noise that nobody can seem to find.
The warning light that keeps coming back.
The electrical issue that only happens sometimes.
The vehicle that's already had parts replaced—but still isn't fixed.

Those are the jobs that make us dig in.

At H. Smith Automotive, we work on everything from everyday drivers and diesels to European vehicles, classics and hot rods—but one of our favorite things is simply figuring out what's actually wrong.

Because replacing parts until something works can get expensive.

Finding the problem first? That's what diagnostics are for.

Have a vehicle that's been giving you—or another shop—a headache? We don't mind a challenge. 😉

🧠 TEST YOUR CAR IQ!

Your temperature gauge suddenly climbs into the RED. 🔥

What do you do?

A) Turn the A/C up
B) Keep driving until you get home
C) Pull over somewhere safe and shut the engine off
D) Immediately open the cooling system and add cold water

Got your answer? 👀

👇 ANSWER: C

An overheating engine can go from a cooling-system problem to major engine damage surprisingly quickly.

Safely get off the road and shut the vehicle down. And never remove a hot radiator/cooling-system cap—the system can be under pressure and extremely hot.

Sometimes the least expensive repair is knowing when to stop driving.

MYTH:
“Every car needs an oil change every 3,000 miles.”

REALITY: Not necessarily.

Modern engines, synthetic oils, manufacturer specifications, driving habits, vehicle age, mileage, and operating conditions can all affect the appropriate oil-change interval.

And here in Arizona, heat, dust, lots of idling and stop-and-go driving are worth considering when deciding how your vehicle should be maintained.

The answer isn't automatically 3,000 miles—and it isn't automatically 10,000 miles either.

👉 The right interval is the one that's right for your vehicle and how you drive it.

Not sure? That's exactly the kind of question we're happy to help with.

🔧 ASK A TECHNICIAN

Q: My car has a weird smell. Does it actually mean anything?

Absolutely. Your nose can sometimes give us an important clue about what’s happening with your vehicle.

👃 A sweet smell can sometimes be associated with coolant.
🔥 A burning-oil smell could mean oil is getting onto a hot engine or exhaust component.
🥚 A rotten-egg/sulfur smell can point toward an emissions or fuel-related issue.
🛞 A burning-rubber smell deserves attention too—especially if it's new or getting stronger.

The important part is not guessing based on the smell alone. It gives a technician a place to start, but testing tells us what's actually happening.

And if you ever notice smoke, an extremely strong burning smell, overheating, or another serious warning sign, don't just keep driving.

🚗💡 FUN FACTS WITH JAX

Think your car is mostly mechanical? Not anymore.

Modern vehicles can have dozens of electronic control modules communicating with each other—controlling everything from your engine and transmission to your windows, seats, safety systems and climate control.

That’s also why diagnosing today's vehicles isn't always as simple as plugging in a scanner and replacing whatever part shows up on the screen.

Sometimes the real problem is a sensor. Sometimes it's wiring. Sometimes it's a communication issue. And sometimes one problem causes another system to complain.

Pretty amazing considering we still just call it a “car.” 😂

Fun fact from Jax: The smarter cars get, the more important proper diagnostics become.

☀️ SAVE MONEY MONDAY — Your A/C may not be the problem.

If the air coming from your vents feels weaker than it used to, it’s easy to assume something expensive is going wrong with the A/C.

But sometimes, the first place to look is much simpler: your cabin air filter.

A dirty or clogged cabin filter can restrict airflow through the vents. And after months of Arizona dust, dirt and debris, it can get pretty nasty.

Before assuming you need a major A/C repair, have the system properly checked and find out what's actually causing the problem.

That's the difference between replacing parts and diagnosing the problem.
