Yes we really make our own seats in house from start to finish. Every part of it. So when you ask why they are expensive it’s cause we make every part and it’s very time consuming. Weld up the frames, paint them, foam them and then wrap them, all in house.

Pontiac paid $5 to the Sports Car Club of America for every Trans Am they sold.

Then they built a car that could not legally run in the Trans Am series.

The rules capped the class at five liters. 305 cubic inches. The smallest engine Pontiac put in a 1969 Trans Am was a 400. Not close, not a technicality, just flatly ineligible.

They did try. Pontiac built a 303 to fit the rule. The SCCA wanted a thousand production cars before it would approve an engine, and Pontiac got about twenty five of them made. It went nowhere.

Here is the part that bothers the Pontiac guys. A Firebird did run the series in 1969. Jerry Titus drove it. It was a used 1968 Camaro Z/28 race car reskinned as a Firebird with a Chevrolet 302 under the hood, legal on a loophole because Firebirds went to Canada with Chevy power. The only Firebird in Trans Am was a Camaro in a costume.

Meanwhile the street car turned up March 8, 1969 at the Chicago Auto Show. It was not even a model. It was a $724.60 option box. Every single one left the factory Cameo White with Tyrol Blue stripes. No other colors, no choices. Hood scoops the driver could actually open and close. A sixty inch airfoil across the back.

Pontiac sold 697 of them. 689 coupes and 8 convertibles.

Say Trans Am to somebody today and they picture a black and gold second gen with a screaming chicken on the hood. In 1969 it was a slow seller wearing a name Pontiac was renting by the car, for a race it was not allowed to enter.

Pontiac finally won that championship in 1982. Thirteen years of paying for the name before they got to keep the trophy.
