They went up while everyone else came down.
Twenty-five years ago this morning, 343 firefighters climbed stairwells they already knew were coming apart. 37 Port Authority officers and 23 police officers went in with them. 2,977 people did not come home that day.
Nobody on those stairs asked anybody what side they were on. There was a job in front of them and people who needed help. That was the whole of it.
We have worked the shoulder of the road for over half a century now. Our crews are not first responders in the way those men and women were, and we would not claim it. But we know the type.
That instinct is still in this country. It did not go anywhere. Some days it is just harder to see.
Today we remember New York, the Pentagon, and a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
We are running 24/7 as always. If you need us today, we are here.
