On this day in 1966, the first production Camaro made its debut at Chevrolet’s Norwood, Ohio, assembly plant. The very first Camaro design was designated as XP-836 and called the "Panther" at inner circles. In keeping with the “C” naming of their vehicles, Chevrolet selected the word Camaro because it suggested "comradeship of good friends." This was based on Heath’s New French and English Dictionary dated 1932, which defined “Camaro” as “Comrade, Friend, Mate, Chum, or Pal.
