The Knock Sensor
A working principle to piezoelectric elements involves the transmission of an electrical current in response to detecting a change in pressure or vibration by these elements. The piezoelectric element inside the knock sensor is tuned to detect the engine knock/detonation frequency.

Or, in layman's terms, it is in tune with the engine to determine if it is burning fuel correctly.

Here's a set we did a couple weeks ago along with the plugs and wires on a 04 Chevy Silverado with a 6.0 liter vortec motor. It had severe misfire and was loosing considerable fuel milage. She runs like a champ now!
