LOTS OF DETAILS
We schedule the first classes of the season in late-February or March for class sessions starting in April, after Easter. When we start, we will schedule four or five weekend sessions then will wait till the early ones fill up before scheduling classes further into the year. You can get advance notice by following this page. And if you prefer, I can add your name and emai
l address to a list that I will use to send a notice when we set the first classes. If you want to be on this list, please let me know by email at [email protected]. The best way to schedule a class is to check at MSF-USA.ORG. Enter your zip code in the fields for “Find a course near you” and it will show a table with the Parkersburg site. If classes are scheduled it will list the number of scheduled classes. Click on the button for “select site” and then Next Step and it will show the list of classes and will show if any have openings. Once we start scheduling classes you can pick a weekend with an open slot and register. You will enter all your contact info and driver’s license number, and then you can use a credit card to pay. The fee is $100 for WV residents and $225 for nonresidents. You DO NOT NEED to have a permit before you take the class. Some of the info pages incorrectly suggest that you must have the permit or should have the permit. If you’re serious about getting the endorsement on your license, you should schedule an appointment at the DMV to take the written permit test. The test is tricky, so study the pamphlet that they offer and think carefully through the poorly worded questions to select the least wrong answer. For the permit test, set an appointment with the Knowledge Test desk. OR, since August 2021, you can get your permit online. https://apps.wv.gov/Appt/DMV/AppointmentWizard
When you take the class at the range on WVUP, you will take a written test and a skills test. They’re straightforward. If you pass, we give you a completion card. If you already have the permit, you need another appointment at the DMV to show them this card and they will reprint your driver’s license to add the endorsement. If you do not have the permit, schedule the second appointment with DMV at least seven days after the day that you get the permit. When you have the completion card you do not need to take the written or skills test at the DMV. So be certain to schedule your appointment for the “DL or ID Transaction desk.”
The range is at the garage on the west parking lot at WVUP. Some people find it less confusing to enter off of Nicolette Rd. https://goo.gl/maps/pkDoqPHnLyDUNtLz9
The basic beginner’s class takes two days, Sat from 8 to 5 and Sun from 8 to 5. But on the second day we are sometimes finished at 3, often at 4. The class is held, rain or shine, and in frigid cold but not icy weather. You use the program bikes which are typically 250 cc street bikes. You must wear appropriate gear including a DOT certified helmet, full-finger gloves, over-the-ankle boots (high top sneakers are not accepted), long pants with no holes in the knees, and a long sleeve shirt or jacket. We also offer a one-day class for not-quite beginners. If you already know how to use a clutch and are able to use your own street-legal bike for class, we have a version that takes one rather long day to cover all the same elements and also includes the written and skills tests. You get a completion card and do not need to take these tests at the DMV – But you still need to get the permit. That version is called the BRC2. We schedule it less often because we frequently don’t get enough students to hold that version – four students. But you spend less time waiting in line and it only takes one day. The cost is the same.
