As oil ages, the Total Acid Number (TAN) generally increases due to oxidation and chemical degradation of both the base oil and its additive package. The discoloration and edge pitting seen in this shim are indicators of exactly that process.
Regular oil changes are important not just for viscosity breakdown, but additive degeneration and pH shift.
