Did you know? - Safelite has been reported to use steering, intimidation, fear, and misleading insurance practices — all in an effort to capture more business. Don’t be misled. You have the legal right to choose your own auto glass or repair shop — in every state, including Michigan.

We’ve received multiple recent reports from consumers who were steered to Safelite by their insurance provider — only to experience concerning tactics once they made contact.

According to policyholders, Safelite representatives have allegedly:
• Claimed that using another glass shop would be more expensive or result in out-of-pocket costs,
• Suggested that other shops can’t properly calibrate advanced safety systems,
• And in some cases, required customers to sign a waiver if they chose to use an independent glass shop instead of Safelite.

These tactics — known as steering and misrepresentation — undermine consumer choice and may violate state insurance laws designed to protect policyholders’ rights.

In reality, your insurance company determines what is paid for the glass replacement or calibration — not the shop. The insurer sets the approved rates, so using an independent glass shop does not mean you’ll have higher costs or out-of-pocket expenses. Any statement suggesting otherwise is misleading and designed to discourage consumers from exercising their right to choose.

Every policyholder has the legal right to choose their own repair facility. Your insurance company cannot require you to use a specific vendor, and no legitimate glass shop should be discredited through false or coercive claims.

If you’ve experienced similar conduct, we encourage you to:
- Document what was said, including names, dates, and any written or recorded communications.
- File a complaint with your state department of insurance.
- Report it to the Policyholders Rights Coalition so we can continue tracking and addressing these practices.

Consumers deserve transparency — not intimidation or misinformation.
