When lightning strikes, the damage doesn’t always stop at one component. ⚡️

This boat suffered a direct lightning strike that took out virtually every electrical component onboard. Rather than chasing electrical gremlins one system at a time, she’s getting the treatment we believe a lightning-damaged boat deserves: a complete electrical overhaul and some serious upgrades along the way.

The shelves are filling up and the rebuild is about to begin — including:

⚡ Complete electrical system overhaul
🖥️ New Garmin marine electronics
📡 New Garmin radar/antenna equipment
🎵 Full JL Audio sound system
💡 Lumitec lighting upgrades
🌡️ FLIR thermal imaging
🔌 New wiring, networking, connections, and supporting electrical components throughout

With a lightning strike this extensive, simply replacing the components that won’t turn on isn’t enough. Wiring and electrical infrastructure can also be compromised, creating problems that may not show themselves immediately. Our goal is to rebuild the system correctly from the ground up and eliminate as many future electrical gremlins as possible.

When this one leaves Custom Marine Volusia, she won’t just be repaired — she’ll be completely refitted, upgraded, and better equipped than she was before the strike.

⚡ Lightning damage
🔧 Complete refits
🖥️ Marine electronics
🎵 Audio systems
💡 Lighting
🔌 Full rewires & electrical systems

This one turned out to be a little more complex of an install than we originally anticipated.

When installing a trolling motor, we have a few key non-negotiables:

• Trolling motor head stays inside the rub rail
• Bow hatches must open and close freely
• Navigation lights cannot be obstructed
• Trolling motor cannot interfere with the trailer when launching or loading the boat

Due to the size of the base on the Minn Kota QUEST Instinct, we could only accomplish two of those requirements at a time with a traditional mounting setup.

Enter the ShuttleSlide rotating mount.

This setup gave us the adjustability we needed to hit every one of our non-negotiables without compromise. The trolling motor sits where it needs to, the hatch has full clearance, the navigation lights remain visible, and there’s no interference with the trailer.

Sometimes a clean install isn’t about making something fit—it’s about finding the right solution to make it fit correctly.

⚡️ LIGHTNING DAMAGE ISN’T ALWAYS WHAT YOU CAN SEE. ⚡️

After meeting with a marine surveyor yesterday, one thing was made very clear: lightning-related claims on boats have become increasingly common over the past few years.

And the two boats pictured here are perfect examples of just how devastating a strike can be. Both boats sustained lightning strikes to the outriggers, with the electrical path ultimately exiting through the shore-power system. In both cases, the event took out every electrical component on the boat—including the motors.

And it doesn’t always take a direct strike to cause major damage.

A direct lightning strike—or even induced/stray voltage from a nearby strike—can travel throughout a boat’s electrical system, potentially damaging everything from chartplotters, radar and autopilot components to pumps, chargers, stereos, lighting, networking equipment, engine electronics and other onboard systems.

But one of the most important things that can be overlooked after a lightning event is the wiring itself.

Simply replacing the components that have already failed doesn’t necessarily address the entire problem. A high-voltage event can potentially compromise wiring, connections, terminals and insulation throughout the boat. Even if a wire appears fine and a circuit is functioning today, hidden damage can contribute to intermittent failures, resistance issues, corrosion and electrical “gremlins” down the road.

That’s why, when the extent of lightning damage warrants it, we push for a complete electrical refit—including replacement of the wiring throughout the boat—not just swapping out the electronics that stopped working.

Replacing a failed component while continuing to power it through a potentially compromised electrical system may only address part of the problem.

At Custom Marine Volusia, we work with all insurance companies and thoroughly document our findings. Our goal isn’t to put a Band-Aid on lightning damage. It’s to properly overhaul the electrical system and minimize the possibility of chasing unexplained electrical failures months or years down the road.

🏈 Game day at the sandbar just got an upgrade! ⚓️📺

We integrated a Roku directly into this boat’s Garmin system, giving the owner the ability to stream live TV, games, movies, and more right from the Garmin displays.

Pair that with the newly installed Starlink, and now you’ve got high-speed internet and your favorite entertainment right on the water. Whether you’re tied up at the sandbar watching the game, cruising with the family, or just want something playing while you’re hanging out — you’re connected.

At Custom Marine Volusia, we’re always looking for ways to take your electronics package beyond the basics. Clean installations, custom integration, and systems built around how YOU actually use your boat.

Starlink + Roku + Garmin = Game Day anywhere. 🏈🌊

Another clean custom install out of the shop! 🔥

We installed a Black Oak Nitro XD Pro on this Contender, but getting the camera in the perfect position meant doing more than simply bolting it on.

The existing anchor light was right where the camera needed to be, so we relocated the anchor light to give the Nitro XD Pro the ideal mounting location with a clear, unobstructed view ahead.

It’s the little details that make the difference. We don’t just install equipment — we make sure every component is positioned and rigged to perform the way it should while keeping the finished product clean and factory-looking.

Whether it’s thermal/night vision, electronics, trolling motors, lighting, rewires, repowers, or complete refits, Custom Marine Volusia has you covered.

More runtime. Less downtime.

We optimized the charging system on this 27’ Contender to keep the Seakeeper running non-stop for the entire trip, instead of being limited to only 3–4 hours of runtime.

We added a high-amperage, highly efficient Victron Orion DC-to-DC charger, allowing the engine charging system to efficiently replenish the Seakeeper battery bank while underway.

The result? Continuous Seakeeper operation without worrying about running the batteries out 4 hours into the trip.

This is the kind of system optimization we specialize in—finding the right solution to make your boat’s equipment work the way it should. ⚓️
