What is a diagnosis? Is it just the free scan you get at an auto parts store? Why does it cost to have it done? Why is it recommended to have it done even if I'm confident of what my problem is?
A diagnosis is the process used by a skilled professional using their tools, time, and expertise to accurately troubleshoot a reported issue in order to properly recommend a repair.
It includes, but is not limited to, a computer scan, visual inspection, and test drive.
A computer scan, which most auto parts stores perform for free, will pull up trouble codes present in the computer modules of a vehicle. Diagnose trouble codes (DTCs) are meant to "get you in the ballpark" of what the issue is. They are NOT meant to be a one to one correlation from problem to solution. It is necessary to understand how to interpret the data that's displayed to know what to do with it. Don't just load up the parts canon and start installing things on the car.
Given the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to accurately troubleshoot an issue with a car, there's value associated with doing so. The value a skilled mechanic offers justifies a fee being charged.
Even if you're confident in your own knowledge and have a general idea of what you need, it's good to have peace of mind from a professional before you spend your hard earned money on repairs.
