⚙️ Converter Stall: What Does It Actually Do?
Torque converter stall speed is the approximate engine RPM the converter allows under load before the vehicle begins accelerating aggressively. Selecting the correct stall speed helps place the engine closer to the RPM range where it produces useful torque and horsepower.
🔥 Higher stall: Allows the engine to reach higher RPM under acceleration, helping modified engines enter their effective power range more quickly.
🔧 Lower stall: Keeps engine RPM lower during inital acceleration and is generally better suited for stock or mild engines that produce strong torque at lower RPM.
The key? Matching the converter to the entire combination. Engine displacement, camshaft specifications, torque curve, vehicle weight, transmission, rear axle ratio, tire diameter, and intended use can all affect the proper stall selection. Remember, advertised stall speed is an approximate range. Actual stall can vary depending on how much torque the engine produces and the vehicle combination.
