FALSE — and on modern vehicles with complex electronics, an improper jump start can cause damage that costs far more than a service call.

The correct cable connection order — positive to dead battery, positive to good battery, negative to good battery, negative to unpainted metal ground on the dead vehicle — is real and important. Reversing polarity by connecting cables incorrectly can damage or destroy the alternator, onboard computers, fuses, and sensitive electronic modules in both vehicles. But even with correct connection order, there are risks on modern vehicles. Many newer cars have sensitive electronics that can be damaged by voltage spikes during jump starting. Some manufacturers recommend against jump starting certain models entirely and specify a different procedure using a dedicated power supply port. Additionally, a battery that has completely discharged may have internal damage that causes it to fail again immediately or in the near future — a jump start gets you going but does not tell you whether the battery is safe to rely on. If you are unsure about your vehicle's jump start procedure or the battery has failed completely, a professional jump start from an experienced roadside technician is the safer choice.
