On September 1, 1985, a joint American-French expedition finally located the wreck of RMS Titanic, 73 years after the ship sank in the North Atlantic.

The expedition was led by Robert Ballard of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER. Their teams searched the seafloor using advanced deep-sea imaging technology, including the remotely operated camera system Argo, deployed from the research vessel Knorr.

Rather than searching only for the massive hull, the team followed a trail of debris scattered across the seafloor. Shortly after 1:00 a.m., they spotted something unmistakable: one of Titanic's boilers.

Following the debris trail led them to the wreck itself, lying more than 12,400 feet (3,800 meters) beneath the surface.

After 73 years, the final resting place of Titanic had finally been located.

Ironically, Carpathia was not the closest ship to Titanic.

The rough order was:

Californian → Mount Temple → Carpathia → Birma

Yet it was Carpathia that ultimately became the main rescue ship.

Distance alone was not the deciding factor. The ships’ heading, speed, the position of the ice field, their ability to receive Titanic’s wireless messages, and the decisions made by their captains all determined whether they could reach Titanic in time.

Even though Mount Temple was closer than Carpathia, its route was blocked by a large ice field. Carpathia, meanwhile, managed to navigate through the dangerous ice and reached Titanic’s lifeboats at around 4:00 a.m.

As the boat was being lowered, passengers realized they needed someone with experience to help row. Arthur Peuchen, a Canadian businessman and experienced yachtsman, volunteered. Lightoller allowed him into the boat on the condition that he climb down the falls himself.

Among those aboard were Margaret Brown, Helen Churchill Candee, Frederick Fleet, and several other passengers and crew.

Once in the water, Lifeboat 6 moved away from Titanic and later rendezvoused with other lifeboats. It was eventually taken aboard RMS Carpathia after the rescue ship arrived at the scene.

On April 15, 1912, Fifth Officer **Harold Lowe** took command of Lifeboat No. 14 as Titanic's evacuation continued.

The boat was lowered from the port side with roughly 40 people aboard. As several people tried to approach the boat, Lowe fired three warning shots into the air to prevent a rush. There is no evidence that he shot anyone.

After reaching the water, Lowe gathered several nearby lifeboats and transferred passengers so that he could return toward Titanic and search for people in the water.

Lowe eventually went back with Lifeboat 14. He found only a few survivors still alive in the freezing water, including Harold Phillimore** and a Chinese passenger later identified as Fang Lang. Another survivor, William Hoyt, was brought aboard but died soon afterward.

Lowe was also notable for using the boat's mast and sail while searching the area, although rowing remained the main method of movement.

His decision to return to the wreck site made Lifeboat 14 one of the few boats to actively search for survivors after Titanic disappeared beneath the water.

Just days after the sinking of RMS Titanic, survivors became the focus of enormous public and media attention.

In April 1912, newspapers and photographers followed the survivors closely as they returned home or gave statements about the disaster. Photographs of survivors were widely published, making some of them recognizable figures almost immediately after the sinking.

Autographs from Titanic survivors also became historical keepsakes. Museums and archives still preserve examples of signatures from survivors, including Margaret Brown, Archibald Gracie, and Eva Hart.

On April 16, 1912, news of the Titanic disaster was still developing, and conflicting reports were appearing in newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Philip A. S. Franklin, vice president of the International Mercantile Marine Company, initially believed that Titanic's passengers and crew had been safely transferred. Early reports from the White Star Line also incorrectly suggested that there had been no loss of life.

As messages from ships at sea and telegraph stations reached shore, the situation became increasingly unclear. One early report estimated that only about 675 people had survived, although the exact number was still unknown at the time.

Amid the chaos, inaccurate illustrations and exaggerated accounts also began to appear, as media outlets rushed to capture public attention.

Within the following days, the arrival of RMS Carpathia in New York on April 18*and testimony from the survivors provided much clearer information.

The full scale of the disaster gradually became known: more than 1,500 people had died, while about 705 survived.

During the voyage, Browne photographed Titanic's interiors, decks, passengers, and crew. His photographs include some of the last known images of Captain Edward Smith, as well as rare views of everyday life aboard the ship.

While aboard, Browne became friendly with a wealthy couple who offered to pay for his journey to New York. He contacted his Jesuit superiors for permission, but the answer was a firm instruction to leave the ship at Queenstown.

Browne followed the order and returned to Ireland. Titanic continued across the Atlantic without him and sank four days later.

He later regarded his obedience to the order as an extraordinary stroke of providence. His decision to leave also meant that the photographs he had taken aboard Titanic survived the disaster and became some of the most important visual records of the ship's final voyage.

As the evacuation of RMS Titanic began, Isidor and Ida Straus went to the Boat Deck. Ida was offered a place in a lifeboat, but Isidor, who was 67 years old, declined to enter while women and children were still being given priority.

Ida chose to remain with her husband rather than leave him. She reportedly gave her fur coat to her maid, Ellen Bird, before staying with Isidor.

Several survivors later recalled seeing the couple together on the deck during the final stages of the sinking. The exact details of their final moments are uncertain, but both died when Titanic sank on April 15, 1912.

Isidor's body was recovered several days later by the CS Mackay-Bennett. Ida's body was never recovered.

Isidor and Ida had been married for more than 40 years and had five children.

Today, they are remembered together at Straus Park in New York City, and their names are also inscribed on the Straus family memorial at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Of the more than 1,500 people who died, approximately 700 survivors were rescued from the lifeboats by RMS Carpathia.
