WE’RE HIRING: Part-Time Driving Instructors!

Do you consider yourself the calm in the storm? Can you keep it together when a student’s hand accidentally steers right up onto the curb? Or when they shakily ask, “Do I look before I go?” (Answer: YES. Always. 👀)

If you can survive all of that without having an aneurysm — we want you on our team!

We’re looking for:
• A patient soul who can calmly coach students through those heart-stopping learning moments (like when they confidently try and cruise through an intersection without looking).
• Someone who can guide our future drivers through those "hold-your-breath" moments with confidence (like when they take that curve they’re used to taking at 40mph...but it’s 2 inches of snow).
• A sense of humor for when the curb occasionally becomes part of the route, rights become lefts, or when “remember to breathe” is interpreted as “hyperventilate right now!”

We provide all the training — you bring the calm, the patience, and maybe an extra cup of coffee (or three..).

Ready to make a difference (and laugh at... no, with the chaos along the way)? Apply today!

A heartfelt message from Marilyn the driving cat and the rest of the staff at KMD Driving School: We would like to remind you to eat and drink responsibly on this SuperBowl Sunday. If you have been drinking, please call a taxi, call a friend and do not drive. If you are sober and must drive today, be alert and cautious as many out there on the road may be intoxicated. Survive your drive and GO PATS!

Oh hey — it’s snowing. And if you’re hearing that crunchy sound under your tires, there’s probably a little ice mixed in.
Even though it’s been colder than heyell today, the pavement is often warmer than you’d expect. Add moisture to that, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for black ice.

So let’s talk about what to do when your car starts sliding.

Winter Driving: What To Do If Your Car Slides

Sliding on snow or ice can happen to anyone. The key is staying calm and resisting the urge to overreact.

If Your Car Starts Sliding:

• Ease off the gas
• Do not slam the brakes
• Gently steer where you want the car to go
• Hold steady and let the tires regain traction

Overcorrecting usually makes things worse. Small, smooth movements give your tires the best chance to work. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes a wise man once told me.

Why Slides Happen Most at Intersections

Most winter slides don’t happen at highway speeds — they happen near stop signs and red lights because:
• Braking starts too late
• Ice builds up from repeated stopping
• Slush melts, then refreezes

How To Prevent Slides

• Start braking earlier than feels necessary
• Brake gently and gradually
• Slow down well before intersections

Winter driving isn’t about fast reactions — it’s about smooth, early ones ones. Start early and be gentle!

Alright friends — the forecast is calling for over a foot of snow in the next couple of days. That means roads will be slick, visibility will be terrible, and at least one driver will treat the highway like a demolition derby.

Here’s how to survive it:

Clear every inch of snow from your car. Roof, hood, lights, mirrors, license plate — all of it.
Clear the Whole Car — Yes, All of It

If there’s snow on your roof, it’s coming off eventually — usually onto your own windshield when you brake, or into the face of the driver behind you. Neither is ideal.

Brush off the roof, hood, headlights, taillights, and license plate. If your car still looks like a snowbank with mirrors, you’re not done.

Slow down. Speed limits assume dry roads and optimism. We have neither.

Increase your following distance — if you can see their tires disappear in a snow swirl, you’re too close.

Prep your vehicle: tires, washer fluid, battery, lights — everything should be winter-ready. Batteries hate the cold.

Patience is your secret weapon. Give yourself extra time. Arriving alive > arriving fast.

Keep the shiny side up.

Creeping at red lights 🚦
You know the routine—first car inches forward, the second follows, then the third… and suddenly everyone’s playing a slow-motion game of bumper cars.
Here’s the problem: every time you move and hit the brakes again, you increase your chances of getting rear-ended. Most drivers behind you are on their phones (let’s be honest). They notice movement in their peripheral vision, glance up, assume the light turned green… then take one more “quick” look at their screen.
That’s how many crashes at lights happen.
When you’re stopped at a red light, stop once and stay put until it actually turns green. No one is going anywhere until that light changes—creeping doesn’t get you there faster. In fact, it’s a great way to cost yourself a lot more time.
I teach this in class, but I see licensed drivers doing it every day. Hopefully this tip saves you a headache, a bumper, or both.

👉 Feel free to share this with any impatient light creepers you might know.

Hello friends—Nathan here from KMD Driving School 👋

I wanted to introduce myself and what we’ll be sharing here. Yes, we help students pass their driver’s test—but more importantly, we teach them how to survive their drives.

Fun fact: some of the most creative driving mistakes I see don’t come from new drivers. They come from fully licensed adults who definitely should know better. (You know who you are… and I say that with love.)

This page will be a mix of practical driving tips, gentle reminders, a few driving-behavior pet peeves, and the occasional Tales from the Passenger Seat. My hope is that it reaches a broad audience—because no matter how long you’ve been driving, there’s always something new to learn.

Glad you’re here. Buckle up—more tips coming soon.
